Join in for Peanut/Pecan Walk of Fame Bingo

Come out this Friday for the Peanut/Pecan Walk of Fame Bingo drawing, Pecan Bake Show and Santa pictures at the DeLeon City Hall auditorium.

Anyone who brings a jar of peanut butter to the Chamber of Commerce office on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, December 2, 3 or 4, will receive a bingo card featuring local businesses. They will then be able to “play bingo” by having those businesses stamp their cards.

The names of two winners will be drawn Friday night at 7 p.m. from all the completed bingo cards and the winners will receive $500 each and a $50 gas card from Allsups.

“As you begin your Peanut/Pecan Walk of Fame this year - take the time to look around in our hometown shops and businesses,” said Linda Levens, executive director of the DeLeon Chamber of Commerce. “There's a lot more here than you may think. Don't forget not to go in the businesses marked ‘Free Space.’ They want to help out but are not really meant for public access.”  …

THANKSGIVING DAY FIRE. DeLeon, Promotory Park and Sipe Springs fire departments responded to a fire of unknown origins on Thanksgiving Day at the home of Billy Jack Glover, south east of DeLeon. According to DeLeon Fire Chief Doyle Rone, the home sustained fire damage to the northeast side and smoke damage throughout. The fire was spotted by Haley Tramell, 7, who was playing in a yard across the road. Although the Glovers were not at home at the time, people rushed in to help move the Glover’s animals from the front yard. Donation jars have been set up at various stores in DeLeon and Comanche to assist the Glover family.

CCMC loses less, may toss Blue Cross

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

Good news may be here again for the much embattled Comanche County Medical Center, as an exponential financial improvement was reflected in last month’s revenues, released Tuesday at a regular meeting of the Comanche County Hospital District Board of Directors.

While the hospital reported a loss of $21,939 in net income for the month of October, the figure was much smaller than the six-figure hemorrhage that has afflicted CCMC over the past several months.

An optimist might view the decline in losses as a sign that the massive billing problems that have plagued the hospital since last winter may have finally subsided.

“October was a great collection month for us,” reported CCMC CEO Kevin Storey.

Council discusses Dickey’s replacement as Police Chief

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

DeLeon City Council met in a regular whirlwind 39-minute meeting Tuesday, Nov. 24, having rescheduled due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Coucilwoman Billie Lightfoot was not present due to an illness in the family, but a quorum was established with all others members present.

After approving the minutes from the last council meeting, the council took no action on their two first agenda items, the first being a presentation and update from Hugh Welch regarding the city hall restoration project, and the second being a request by TrevaWygle regarding Comanche County Living Magazine, as neither Wygle nor Welch were present at the meeting.

The council approved resolution #014-09 to impose an additional fee for collection costs on fines and fees.

The council then discussed and considered a city Christmas party, and it was generally agreed that the cost of previous parties had been too excessive.

Chris and Angela Steele are already familiar faces in the DeLeon area. Angela is an instructional assistant at DeLeon Elementary (greeting each student at the front of the school each morning) and Chris is a firefighter with the Promotory Park Volunteer Fire Department.

Now they hope to get even better acquainted with everyone through their new store, Bella’s, billed as the place to shop for “antiques, uniques, crafts and resale” items.

Having moved here from Fort Worth three years ago, the Steeles opened their new downtown store recently in a building they purchased from J.J. and Glenda Garza. The building had most recently housed J.J. Antiques. For 30 years prior to that it had housed Betty Wofford’s Blossom Shop.

Unidentified flying objects

DeLeonians witness lights

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

On three consecutive nights during the week before Thanksgiving, DeLeonians and other area residents witnessed something that has become somewhat commonplace - strange and unexplained lights in the night sky.

The most prolific sightings came on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 18-19, when at least four DeLeon witnesses reported seeing lights above the community of Comyn.

One witness reported seeing the lights as he and a group of friends enjoyed a campfire on Wofford St. in north DeLeon.

“There were five bright orange lights over Comyn,” reported the witness. “It was bigger than a half mile wide; it was insane.”

“I’ve never seen a light that bright in my life,” continued the witness, who has spent much of his life in the electrician’s trade.

“It was five times as bright as the lights on the water tower.”
