In their
quest for another chapter in Texas football history, your
DeLeon Bearcats will face Collinsville in Mansfield at
Newsom Stadium 7:30 p.m. Friday, about two miles east of
Highway 287 on East Broad Street. With the Collinsville
Pirates defeating the Quinlan Boles Hornets last Friday
night in Aubrey, the playoff preparations for the Bearcats
now switch focus from the favored Hornets to the up and
coming Pirates.
In what was touted
one of the two biggest upsets for the first round of 2009 playoffs
in all divisions and perhaps one of the biggest in 1A football
history, the 5-5 Pirates laid the strap to the third-ranked team in
the state, the 10-0 Hornets, by a score of 56-21.
The Pirates seemed
to limp into the playoffs, having lost to Goldthwaite, Prairieland,
S and S Consolidated, Muenster and Lindsey.
They were 3-2 in
district.
Meanwhile, Boles was
10-0, having sailed into the playoffs and expecting to play for a
state trophy.
The Pirates held a
21-0 lead in the game before the cheerleaders could get loosened up,
tallying three scores in the games first 3 minutes and 19 seconds,
all off of turnovers. The first came after a fumble by
the quarterback, the second on an errant snap and sack of the punter
on the one yard line, and the third, a fumble in the end zone
recovered by the Pirates.
The rumble heard in
the stands was the sound of an approaching avalanche.
Collinsville led
34-0 shortly after the starting of the second period. Those 34
points were the difference in the 35 point win.
“I've been keeping
up with Collinsville for 5 years now,” said DeLeon head coach Jason
Ferguson, who watched the game. “Coach Danny David is a Pilot Point
Graduate as well and we played in the same system. He has 7 State
Championship rings as a player and one of the backbone coaches for
Celina for many years. So I knew what to expect. I felt very
confident that they could play with Boles.
“Did I expect what
happened? No. But I did expect a very well coached team that was
going to get after Boles. I'm not surprised they won in the least.
Very glad for Coach David actually.”
The Collinsville
victory changes how DeLeon has to prepare for the game, as opposed
to the plan for playing the Hornets.
“Boles has an
incredibly good offensive scheme,” said Coach Ferguson.
“Very good system.
If you can do something to disrupt the scheme, you have a chance of
winning. With Collinsville, it won't be the scheme that matters
much. This will be a unique match-up in the fact that two
programs based on the same principles of 'Attitude' and 'Effort'
will be going at it. This game will be won by the team that gives
better effort and makes fewer mistakes.”
Bearcat fans are
anticipating a tailgate party before the game and hoping for a
celebration after the game, as DeLeon goes for its first playoff win
in several years.
“We need everyone in
DeLeon with a pulse to make the trip to Mansfield Friday night,”
said Coach Ferguson.

game will be available on 94.3FM "the OX" -- and online on their

ARTIFACT SHOW DRAWS LARGE AREA CROWD
By JON AWBREY, Publisher

DeLeon played host to another
successful Indian artifacts show Saturday, providing space for 31
booths and attracting over 200 visitors, many of whom traveled a
respectable distance to attend.
And some left a thousand dollars
richer, while others left a few artifacts heavier.
Collectors flocked to the DeLeon City
Hall Auditorium to buy, sell, and display what for many were the
prizes of a lifelong obsession.

CHIEF DICKEY RETIRES
By LAURA KESTNER, Editor
|
|
Chief Ralph Dickey announced his
intention to retire soon during the most recent DeLeon City Council
meeting, Thursday, November 12, 2009.
All council members -- Gayle Stroud,
Bobby Schuman, Billie Lightfoot, Pauline Villarreal, Lee Childers
and Mayor Danny Owen -- were present for the 6 p.m. meeting.
In addition to Chief Dickey, those
present and participating included Lois Rockefeller, city attorney;
Karen Wilkerson, city administrator/secretary; Ray Helberg, Comanche
County emergency management coordinator, and Sgt. Ben Rowell.
Chief Dickey said that he would be
willing to stay for a while, if they need him, until such time as a
replacement could be found.
“I’ve been wrestling with this for
about a year,” Dickey said. “I’m burnt out -- I’m getting out of law
enforcement. I’m not capable right now of giving it my all, and
that’s always been very important to me. It’s been fun, I’ve enjoyed
working for the city.”
Mayor Owen expressed his appreciation
to Dickey for taking on the position of chief in the first place. “I
know you agreed to be chief, reluctantly, just to help us out,” Owen
said, “and I appreciate it.”
Dickey also informed council members
that Officer James Elliott would be leaving the DeLeon Police
Department, effective November 23, to work in Brownwood. …

IN ARM’S WAY. At
11:57 a.m. Monday DeLeon was racked by emergency sirens of all
varieties when Armando de Luna of Brownwood, an employee of IESI,
had his arm pinned between a garbage truck and a dumpster in the
800 block of N. McKinney. De Luna was attempting to move a
dumpster that had fallen into the truck, when it slipped and
pinned his arm. Firefighters used a Porta-power, a
pre-jaws-of-life hydraulic tool, to free de Luna in a matter of
minutes. No injuries resulted from the potentially dangerous
accident. |
