Conaway in DeLeon

Town hall meeting Friday

Residents of DeLeon and the surrounding environs will have an opportunity to direct their frustrations toward the U.S. Congress first hand Friday, November 13, when U.S. Representative Mike Conaway holds a town hall meeting at DeLeon’s City Hall auditorium.

Conaway is scheduled to arrive at the auditorium at 8:25 Friday morning for what Conaway’s district director Ricky Wright calls “Ask Mike Anything.”

“He will deal with healthcare, the economy, and the effects of cap and trade from the perspective that he looks at,” said Wright.

Artifact Show this Weekend at City Hall

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

The third annual DeLeon Indian Artifact Show is scheduled for this Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the DeLeon City Hall auditorium from 8 to 4 p.m. Organizers of this Chamber of Commerce sponsored event said they are very pleased with the response to this year’s show.

“We booked 23 selling tables, and four display tables,” said Linda Levens, executive director for the chamber, “and that puts us a few up over last year.”

The show, as in previous years, is expected to draw participants and visitors from around the state.

Among the items that are expected to be available for purchase this weekend are artifact-related books and magazines, jewelry and display cases, and, of course, artifacts.

Coryell votes to enter Middle Trinity district

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

The Middle Trinity Groundwater Conservation District grew by one this month, as voters in Coryell County approved a measure to join the district by a margin of 64 percent to 36 percent.

At a regular meeting of the district’s board of directors Thursday, District Manager Joe Cooper notified directors that Coryell’s representatives would likely be present as soon as the district’s regular December meeting, scheduled to be held at the Extension Center in Stephenville as the expanded board can no longer be accommodated in their present home in Dublin’s city hall.

Supporters of Coryell County’s admission to the district, Cooper reported, were hopeful that voters would approve the measure by “50 percent plus one,” but the rural residents, who largely supported joining the district, turned out in large numbers while urban residents, mainly located in Copperas Cove, stayed home on election day.

Because Coryell County was once a member of a now-defunct water district, volunteers to serve on the MTGCD board were reportedly not hard to come by.

Coryell County joins Comanche, Erath, and Bosque Counties as members of the district.

Court receives tree-cutting money, buys Caterpillar

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

Sixteen county officials and citizens attended Monday’s regular meeting of the Comanche County Commissioners Court.

All Commissioners, Kenneth Feist, Jimmy Dale Johnson, Sherman Sides, and Gary Underwood were present, but County Judge James Arthur was uncharacteristically absent from the court.

Nancy Jewel of the Soil and Water Conservation Service reported that the district received a monetary allotment of which a little over $27,000 is to be shared between Comanche and Erath County for the upkeep and maintenance of conservation dams in the county. The county may bid the projects out to contractors, or may do the work with county staff. The state desired estimates for dams that need to be cleaned up, and will put up 90 percent of the cost if the county will provide 10 percent, of which labor can be accepted. The county will be provided a list for in-kind matches detailing how much labor and services are worth. The allotted money needs to be spent by next September. Work will include removing all the trees from the dams, cutting them off at the ground, and dragging trees to one end of the dam site or chipping them up.

Riggs takes pick ‘em prize

By JILL SMITH, Reporter

Week 10 proved to be a much improved week for our panel of pickers.

Beth Riggs won the $100 prize in our final week of this year’s football contest. She was the only contestant with a perfect pick.

Close behind in the one game missed category were Sam Frasier, Terry Hodges, Talmage Hodges, Michael Kelly, and Karen Whitehead.

The upset of the week for our panel of pickers actually involved two very tough college games.

Baylor’s victory over Missouri was incorrectly predicted by over 86 percent of the panel. Texas A&M’s oh-so-close one point win over Colorado caused 75 percent of the panel a missed pick.

The outcome of both games kept 35 percent of our contestants out of the “perfect pick” category.

DeLeon’s exciting shut out of Gorman was predicted by 100 percent of the panel. Way to go Bearcats!

Three other games accurately predicted by 99 percent of the panel this week were Tolar’s shut out of Ranger, Rising Star’s demolition of May, and Texas’s big victory over UCF.

We would like to thank all of the sponsors who made this year’s contest possible, and all of the participants who played. We hope it added some fun and excitement to your football weekends.

Congratulations again to all of the winners!
