Commissioners Propose Tax Hike

Hog Heaven:  Fund Trapper Program

By JON AWBREY, Publisher

County Tax Hike Proposed

Comanche County Commissioners went forward in proposing a 5.3 percent tax increase Monday during a boisterous four-hour meeting of the Commissioners Court. Most of the crowd was on hand to discuss predator control (see related story), but the court did address a number of items unrelated to wildlife.

The newly proposed tax rate of 64.447 cents per taxable hundred is a significant increase over last year’s 61.2 cents per taxable hundred, and it drew at least one opponent, Commissioner Jimmy Johnson, who steadfastly opposed the proposition.

On Monday, over 50 interested citizens and local government officials crowded into the Comanche County Commissioners Court in support of Comanche County’s predator control program.

At the root of the problem was Comanche County Predator Control Association’s inability to pay their normal share of the cost of the county’s trapper.

Brad Bettis of C.C.P.C.A. addressed the court, reporting that the financial support of the predator control association had worsened over the last year

Rodeo Rides Successfully Through DeLeon

THE FIRST ANNUAL DELEON RODEO. The town of DeLeon was treated to a whole heapin’ helpin’ of rodeo delights last weekend, with the first rodeo performance in town in over three decades. Above, a roper doesn’t quite get her prize, while Rodeo Queen Latisha Abbey, inset, does.

The “First Annual DeLeon Rodeo” drew a thick crowd this weekend, as well as a thick crowd of contestants.

According to Rodeo organizer Rick Gretsinger, an estimated 1,500 spectators crowded into the DeLeon Tractor Pull Arena to get an eyeful of bareback, saddle bronc, and bull riding, as well as tie down roping, breakaway roping, team roping, and barrel racing. \

“It was probably one of the best rodeos I’ve seen in a long time,” said Gretsinger. “The announcer kept things moving, Terry Wells’ stock was excellent, the Texas Cowgirls were a very professional riding group. Everything went really well. We had nothing but good comments.”

DeLeon’s own Latisha Abbey was named Rodeo Queen, followed by first runner-up Lindsey Ballenger and second runner-up Erin Sparger.

DeLeon’s youngsters also had an opportunity to test their cowboy or cowgirl skills in the nightly calf scramble and mutton busting events, winning buckles and Wrangler jeans.

Clearly among the fan favorites was Texas State Representative Sid Miller, who put on a blazing show of roping Saturday night. Oddly, Miller dominated the last DeLeon rodeo held some three decades ago, winning numerous events and being named all around cowboy. On Saturday, Miller showed he had not lost his competitive edge.

DeLeon Police Officer Hill Battling Multiple Sclerosis

Seeks Treatment in Costa Rica

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

HEATHER HILL. Officer Heather Hill shortly after coming to work for the DeLeon Police Department.

The earliest signs, severe seizures, appeared when she was only 19 (just after the birth of her first child) but it would be 12 years before young Heather Harding would receive an official diagnosis.

In the interim, Heather, now Heather Hill, 33, and a detective with the DeLeon Police Department, would sometimes have trouble walking, and even had trouble grasping things with her left hand.

She would undergo numerous tests and medical procedures through the years, but would also go through lengthy periods where nothing seemed to be wrong.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. Kindergarten teacher Cindy Abbey was busy putting name tags on students, including Tyson Wofford and Haylee Dyer pictured above, early Monday morning as the first day of school began for the DeLeon Independent School District. According to Dr. Randy Mohundro, DISD superintendent, total school enrollment for the first day was 701, which included 300 at the elementary, 194 at the intermediate/middle school, and 208 at the high school. By Tuesday, that count had inched up to 706. The district ended the 2008-09 school year with a very stable 670 in total enrollment. Dr. Mohundro noted that the district has a very solid kindergarten class this year with 53 students enrolled in the Class of 2023. This is also the first year that the district has expanded its prekindergarten program to include a class of full day students. The program is designed to be an early intervention strategy to insure that students enter kindergarten with all of the developmental skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten and throughout their educational experience.
