BIG SATURDAY NIGHT TRACTOR PULL CROWD. This is what the new tractor pull arena looked like Saturday night of the Festival as all of the stands, including the new higher stands in the middle on the left, were packed. There were dual pulling tracks in use. Late in the evening a four year old girl from Eastland fell from somewhere in the stands. She was careflighted to Cooks Children Hospital. Initial reports indicated her injuries were not life threatening.

Commissioners Enact Alcohol and Drug Testing Policy Changes

Property Tax Rates Discussed

By JERRY MORGAN, Reporter

COMANCHE -- Another longwinded meeting punctuated with two breaks managed to occupy Monday morning in the County Courtroom as the Commissioners Court dealt with a fairly long agenda, but made few decisions of significance.

A minor revision to the county's personnel policy on drug testing was perhaps the action of greatest interest.

Judge James Arthur joined the meeting around a quarter hour late and conducted the remainder, after Commissioner Jimmy Dale Johnson had opened the meeting. Commissioners Corky Underwood, Kenneth Feist and Sherman Sides completed the full membership in attendance.

Other county officials present and participating at various times during the meeting included County Clerk Ruby Lesley, County Auditor Joey Boswell, County Tax Assessor Gay Green, Deputy County Treasurer Sue Brown, County Attorney Craig Willingham, County Sheriff Jeff Lambert, Emergency Services Coordinator Ray Helberg and his and the Commissioners' assistant, Trish Grimshaw.

The first item of business was a presentation by Kevin Burch on behalf of the Comanche Volunteer Fire Department. He was requesting financial aid for the outfitting of a new rescue truck.

Successful 95th Annual P&M Festival Wraps Up

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

From the crowning of the Festival Queen, and all her junior counterparts, on Tuesday, to the crowning of Miss DeLeon, late Saturday night, the 95th annual DeLeon Peach and Melon Festival was filled with fun and excitement.

CEREMONIAL MELON SLICING. Bobby Winkles, the 2009 Peach and Melon Festival chairman, and Megan Williams, the new P&M Festival Queen, are shown slicing a melon during the free watermelon give-a-way downtown Saturday, August 8, during the last day of the Festival.

“Everything went really well,” said Jaye Golden festival committee secretary. “There were more people out there than I’ve seen in awhile.”

Golden said she believes local participation contributed a great deal to this year’s event.

“We’ve seen more De Leon people out here,” she said. “And it’s not just more people attending the events, we’ve had more local help as well.”

In addition to the pageants, festival goers enjoyed tractor pulls, parade, concerts, dances, a carnival, a peach dessert contest, melon (and other fruit) auction and a “Peaches at Sunset” celebration, where peach tea, peach ice cream and peach cobbler were dispensed free (after the parade) courtesy of De Leon’s First Baptist Church.

Linda Levens, executive director of the DeLeon Chamber of Commerce, sponsors of the Golden Saturday activities, said that chamber officials were thrilled with the participation.

“We had a total of 53 booths,” Levens said, “it was just incredible. And I went around and spoke with each individual vendor, and all but three of them were happy with how the day went.”

New Game Room Opens in DeLeon
By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

NEW GAME ROOM. Jack Akard, owner of Jack’d, a new game room downtown.

Jack Akard, owner of the new downtown game room “Jack’d”, originally had a different location in mind for his business -- in another town. But Akard, a Lubbock native and former Comanche resident, said he saw a need in DeLeon.

“I’ve lived here in DeLeon for about a year and a half now,” Akard said, “but before that I had lived in Comanche since 1971. I thought for a while about putting a game room in over there, but one evening when I drove through here, I noticed that across from Freddie’s there were probably 15 to 20 kids standing there. And right across the street, there were five or six more. As I went down the street, I noticed another five or six across from Rollies. Then, down there where that old grocery store is, as you turn onto Sipe Springs Rd., there was another five or six kids. And they were just all standing around talking. They need a place to go, where they can all hang out together and play games.”

Opening a game room seemed like a logical solution to Akard -- for the young people of DeLeon and for himself.
