Fish Kill at Proctor Lake Prompts Investigation
No Definite Answers Yet

By JERRY MORGAN, Reporter

PROCTOR LAKE -- Reports of a large fish kill at Proctor Lake reported in an area newspaper late last week resulted in several phone calls inquiring about what the Free Press knew about the situation.

The initial answer was, "Nothing other than what we read."

There had been no calls or emails or any other types of advisories sent to this newspaper by any of the many state and federal agencies involved in lake and water management prior to the newspaper report or since.

However, an interview with Corps of Engineers Proctor Lake Manager Brett Delk on Monday shed some light on the situation.

Recession Not Apparent in City Sales Tax Receipts

By JERRY MORGAN, Reporter

The economic news around the country has been more than bleak in recent months. Many are categorizing it as the worst shape the national economy has been in since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

And, for those who have recently lost their jobs as various area employers have reduced their labor force, or been acquired by another company, the current times are truly tough.

Things have not been quite as bad in Texas as in many states, however,

Council Hires New Police Officer,

Hears Update on City Hall Renovations

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

DeLeon City Council members voted to hire a new police officer during their most recent regularly scheduled meeting, Thursday, July 9, 2009.

After separate executive sessions to interview two applicants for a police department vacancy, council members voted unanimously to hire James Elliot to fill the position. Elliott, 31, of Muenster, Texas, will begin work in two weeks.

A third executive session was held to discuss and consider applicants for the tax office clerk position.

After reconvening in open session, Mayor Danny Owen noted that 27 applications had been received for the position, and that city officials had narrowed the applicants to six. Council members then voted to allow Tax-Assessor Collector Grace Everhart to narrow the applications to two and review them before a final decision is made.

Early DeLeon Innkeeper Sam Houston McAfee

to be Honored by SCV

By JERRY MORGAN, Reporter

WAYSIDE INN IN DELEON. This photo, said to be dated around 1910-1915, shows Sam McAfee and his daughter, Willie McAfee Lambert.

On Saturday afternoon, July 18, members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization, many dressed in period uniforms and clothing, will place a service marker in the cemetery at the grave of former DeLeon innkeeper Samuel Houston McAfee.

As many as 20 members of McAfee’s family from areas around Texas are also expected to be in town for the occasion, which will likely be highlighted with musket and cannon fire.

One unexpected benefit arising from the ceremony is the revelation of a bit of early DeLeon history. Don Taylor, McAfee’s great-great grandson who lives in Harper, provided photos and information on McAfee’s life, and in particular his final years as one of DeLeon’s early business owners

FIGHTING WILDFIRE. DeLeon volunteer firemen were called on Wednesday afternoon to fight a wildfire north of DeLeon on CR 454/494. The blaze jumped to both sides of the road and proved stubborn to control. No countywide burn ban is yet in effect, but residents are warned to use extreme caution with fire and ignition sources.

PRETTY WILDFLOWERS. This scene is on Highway 6 near the Comanche and Erath County line. While the pink flowers on the left are familiar hill country sights, the purple flowers on tall stems are not. Does anyone know the names?
