Peach and Melon Festival Celebrating 95 Years of History

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

“Celebrating 95 Years of History” is the official slogan for this year’s Peach and Melon Festival, scheduled, as always, for the first full week of August.

Bobby Winkles, festival committee chairman, said last week that it’s not too late for people to pitch in and help with this year’s event.

BOOMTOWN CAFE. Near noontime only a cat is seen in front of this popular restaurant, which is often crowded three evenings a week.

The city of Addison, Texas advertises to be the restaurant capital of the world, claiming to have one eating establishment for every 107 citizens.

Have they never heard of Desdemona?

By JERRY MORGAN, Reporter

VAN DYKE -- A large current month loss, a budget projecting low earnings, and a request that smoking be banned from the entire hospital property were some of the more notable elements at the latest hospital board meeting.

Spanish Dance Not Scheduled for This Year

By LAURA KESTNER, Editor

It seems to have stemmed from an unfortunate series of miscommunications and misunderstandings, but for whatever the reason, for the first time in many years no “Spanish dance” is scheduled for the Friday night of the Festival.

Event organizers said that the dances, including the Saturday night country dance, “have been losing money for years,” so a decision was made last year to forgo actively solicit, or paying, for bands.

CHAMBER BBQ FUNDRAISER. The DeLeon Chamber of Commerce barbecue fundraiser, held July 3 at Trent Thomas’ car lot, was deemed highly successful by event organizers. According to Linda Levens, Chamber executive director, they “sold completely out” of barbecue by 1:15 p.m. Pictured above are Chamber directors Kevin Storey, Barry Hooker and Jim Farley. Also participating, but not pictured, were Jim and Michael Baugh, volunteering through the Rodeo Association, and Tina Fleming, junior board member.

THE OLD DAYS IN DELEON. DeLeon artist Glen Lawless painted this scene not long before he passed away, showing a coal fired locomotive in front of the Katy train station downtown, with the old Lambert Hotel visible in the background where Comanche County Tractor is now located. The painting was provided by Niven Warren, who worked on the Katy railroad line for 25 years.
