WINDBLOWN WILDFIRE. As strong winds accompanying a cold front
blew steadily at 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph late Tuesday
morning, January 29, a wildfire of unknown origins sprang to life
north of CR 4984 near the intersection of Comanche, Erath and
Eastland counties. A large number of volunteer fire fighting units
responded from across the three county area as the fire burned a
path of destruction of around two miles in length. Above we see a
few of the many fire units involved as they set up along Highway
2156, a half mile east of Highway 16, and were able to contain the
fire’s advance. In addition to the many fire units, road
maintainers from Comanche County Precincts 3 & 4 were on the
scene, as were individuals running tractors, all turning under the
dry vegetation that fed the flames. At least one home, the
residence of Betty and Harold Lewis on CR 4980, was reported to
have been lost. |
