There were more pigs than usual and fewer
sheep and market steers at the DeLeon Livestock Show last Saturday,
January 5.
As a result, the conclusion of the swine
portion of the show, which normally marks the noontime lunch break,
did not occur until after 1:30 p.m.
The show judge, Loren Sell, Ag Science
teacher from Perrin-Whitt, was a competent and thorough judge who took
the time to individually visit with each student exhibitor and explain
the basis of his judging. He also fully described his evaluation for
the show crowd after the judging had been completed.
The members of the DeLeon Livestock
Association and the two DeLeon High School Ag Science teachers, Josh
Hodges and Elaine Gibson, and Comanche County’s Ag Extension Agent,
Whit Weems, all cooperated to stage the event.
This year there were 72 swine, both
breeding and market, exhibited in 13 classes. The previous year’s
total was 46 swine in 14 classes.
There were seven market lambs exhibited
in three classes this year. The prior year’s lamb totals were eight
lambs in three classes.
There were only four goats shown in a
single class this year, versus the same number in two classes the
prior year.
There were ten breeding beef heifers
exhibited in five classes, again the same number as in the prior year.
Market steers were down, however, as only
five were exhibited, versus eight in the prior year.
The show day weather was generally mild,
cool in the morning, but before noon most of the jackets were off. By
late afternoon the day was providing a real “warm-up” for the Comanche
County Livestock Show which will begin on the following Saturday,
January 12, and continue into the following Monday.
