The DeLeon Bearcats football team fell to the Gorman Panthers last Friday night by a score of 47-0 in Gorman.

SWING WIDE. Bearcat runner Kevin Smith sweeps left to avoid Panther defense.

The Bearcats failed to score, while the Panthers ground game scored on their first two possession, both times on long runs from junior Matt Underwood (59 and 44 yards, 171 total, four touchdowns). Both extra point conversions were successful, and Gorman led at the end of the first quarter, 14-0.

DeLeon held Gorman on their next two possessions.
Early in the second quarter, Tony Perez broke loose for a 35 yard touchdown run (152 yards total). The extra point counted and the Panther lead was stretched to 21-0.

The Bearcats fumbled the exchange on the next offensive play, and Gorman had a short field. They punched it in from the DeLeon 22 yard line in two plays. After the conversion, Gorman led 28-0.

After an interception on DeLeon’s next possession, Gorman pounded the ball in on a 75 yard drive in seven plays, with Perez toting in the last four yards. The conversion failed. Gorman led 34-0 with over four minutes left in the first half.

The Panthers scored again in the third quarter on a 31 yard pass to Underwood from Tyson Swanner. The conversion failed again, and the lead was 40-0.

Gorman scored in the fourth quarter when Underwood tossed a 48 yard pass to Zack Fox on a flea-flicker.

In the mean time, five of DeLeon’s possession ended with punts. Three went over on downs. One each was lost by fumble and interception. One ended at the end of the first half when the time ran out.

The Bearcats continued to play with heart, and did not lose character in light of late hits and disrespectful gestures from the Panther players.
