A clarification from Comanche County
Sheriff Jeff Lambert regarding the procedures for deputies to work
within the DeLeon city limits was one of the things addressed at the
most recent meeting of the DeLeon City Council, Thursday, October 11.
All council members -- Mayor Danny Owen,
Howard Gifford, Norma Locke, Roy Dale Freeman and Gayle Stroud -- were
present for the 6 p.m. meeting. Also present were City Secretary Karen
Wilkerson, Police Chief Ralph Dickey, and Emergency Management
Coordinator Ray Helberg. City Attorney Lois Rockefeller arrived
mid-way through the meeting. >>Full Story<< |

COMANCHE -- A wide variety of subjects
were on the agenda Monday, but the most controversial item,
construction permitting, was tabled for further consideration.
County Judge James Arthur conducted the
regular meeting of the Commissioners Court on Monday, October 9, with
Commissioners Garry Steele, Kenneth Feist, Bobby Schuman and Jimmy
Dale Johnson attending. >>Full Story<< |

HAMILTON -- Around 75 crowded the Lee
Conference Center in Hamilton on Wednesday afternoon, October 10, to
learn about the status of state efforts to clean up the Leon River
below Proctor Dam.
One of the more significant bits of
information disclosed at the meeting seemed to indicate that the
cities of Comanche, Dublin and Gustine will be under more intense
scrutiny and guidelines in their wastewater plants, and perhaps in
other areas as well. >>Full Story<< |

It’s
not unusual, when browsing through the old DeLeon newspapers from the
1940s and 1950s, to see numerous mentions of bridge clubs. These days,
even though there are fewer mentions, and for that matter, fewer
clubs, there are still players in the DeLeon area.
Every second and fourth Wednesday
afternoon, a group of DeLeon area women meet for an afternoon of
bridge. Bridge is a bidding game, with tables of four, two teams of
two players. Although this particular group has no official name, they
refer to themselves informally as the Wednesday Bridge Club. >>Full Story<< |

There were many surprises in store
for our football contest pickers this last week. So many, in fact,
that none succeeded in correctly predicting all 15 games.
Brad
Sanders, David Cisneroz and Lauren Casey each missed only a single
game and were alone at the top. Sanders' tiebreaker points guess
was only one away from the correct total, and he was able to claim
sole possession of the $50 weekly prize.
Our panel remains mired in "C"
territory with an average of 3.5 misses, or only 77% correct.
There were no misses on two games, Gorman's win over Santo and
Stephenville's defeat of Joshua. Only a single contestant picked
Comanche to win in a game they lost handily to Sweetwater.
The game that accounted for the
largest number of misses was Brownwood's defeat of Copperas Cove,
where over 80% picked against the Lions. Sad to say, but almost
two thirds of our panel picked Ranger to defeat DeLeon, and the
Bearcats thus provided many misses. We're pleased to note that
none of our single loss leaders missed on that game.
TCU's win over Stanford, who only one
week earlier had defeated number-one-ranked USC, cost almost half
of our panel a loss. Grandview's win over Dublin was another big
loss provider.
Next week's contests may be a little easier to predict. Hopefully
our panel can earn a "C+" or maybe even a "B-". |

The DeLeon Bearcat football team defeated
the Ranger Bulldogs last Friday night in double overtime at home by a
score of 23-22 to capture their first win.
When Pedro Calzada booted the first
kickoff through the end zone, you knew his foot was going to come into
play in the game.

VISITING THE FIRE STATION. Slade Gooden, a student in Brenda
Huddleston’s kindergarten class, was one of the DeLeon Elementary
students who visited the DeLeon Fire Station last Friday, as part
of their studies of Fire Prevention Week. Slade, shown here with
Chief Doyle Rone and several of his classmates, gets a laugh at
how some of the protective gear fits him. |
