DeLeon area residents will have a unique
opportunity this Saturday, September 29, to participate in a historic
event -- the first ever tractor pull at the new DeLeon Community Park.
“The money from this event is earmarked
for the improvement of this arena,” said Monty Stewart, one of the
event organizers. “The pullers will be paid, but no one else is taking
a dime. It won’t go to the ball park, or the RV park, it will go to
build this tractor pull arena.” >>Full Story

awaited the Commissioners Court on Monday, September 24, as they began
their second regular meeting of the month. The lengthy budget and tax

Buddy
Cabaniss of DeLeon guessed 64 points on the tiebreaker score total
and thus edged out Rachel Riggs and Jamie Mathis to win the Week
#3 football contest and the $50 prize. All three contestants
missed on a single game.
A baker's dozen contestants all came
close. Nicole Davis, Robert Hudson, Bill Burns, Debbie Fleming,
Kyle Coker, Jason Killebrew, David Cisneroz, Stephen Riggs, Don
Carruth, Terry Hodges, Talmage Hodges, Todd Morris and Jack Casey
all only missed two games.
Once again we had a game listed
incorrectly on our contest form, and thus only 14 games were
scored. Also, the Texas A&M/Miami contest was played on Thursday
evening, and many took advantage of knowing the score on Friday to
correctly pick against the local favorites. Even at that, 17%
still picked the Aggies to win (perhaps out of loyalty?).
Despite one incorrect listing not
counted and the early Texas A&M game, our panel's average grade
was only a C+, or 78.7% correct.
Oklahoma State's squeaking win over
Texas Tech in the high-scoring shootout in Stillwater was missed
by more than 90% of our panel of pickers. Ranger's upset win over
Archer City surprised almost as many, with 83% picking against the
Bulldogs. Valley Mills' win over Tolar was the third most often
missed contest with 38% choosing Tolar.
There was not one entry that missed
picking Meridian to beat Santo, which they did in convincing
fashion. Likewise, only one contestant missed predicting Gorman's
85-0 win over Sterling City, which was an even more convincing
win. There needs to be a "mercy rule" in 11-man football as well
in our opinion. Other popular correct picks included Texas' win
over Rice, Hamilton's defeat of Comanche, and Rio Vista's win over
Perrin Whitt.
We have checked and rechecked our
contest form for Week #4 and hopefully all the contests listed
will be played and there will be no games played before Friday
night.
There are some interesting contests
on tap, including Ranger at Gorman, Baylor at Texas A&M, and
Colorado State at TCU. Study hard and keep in mind that often
times the experts are just as incorrect in their predictions as
the rest of us. |

CLEANING THE TRACK. An unknown person or persons, most likely
from Dublin, spray painted “Dublin Lions” on the Bearcat Stadium
rubber track in front of the visitors stands last week. The
vandalism was discovered Friday morning, September 21. Above we
see Howard Gifford and Nicky Don Wilkerson hard at work with a
power sprayer and scrub brush in removing the grafitti, part of
which is still visible in the photo. |
