Sales tax receipts are often considered to be one of the best current indicators of economic activity in a locality. If that is true, DeLeon’s economy in 2007 is slightly weaker than in the prior year.
For the first nine months of 2007, the City of DeLeon’s sales tax receipts are lagging the same period in 2006 by 2.7%, $132,788 to $136,477. Similar patterns of year-to-year slight declines have also occurred in the prior two years.

For the year, the City of Comanche also is experiencing a slight year-to-year decline of 1.2%, although in recents months the downward trend has shown signs of reversing.

Comanche County as a whole, has experienced a much more significant decline in taxable revenues, with 2007 lagging over 13% behind 2006. The county had positive comparisons in the 2006, however, and the 2007 drop may reflect a correction of overpayment in prior periods.

Ruby Park and Stephen Riggs each missed only a single game last week, and both had the exact same number of points on the tiebreaker, so each will share the $50 weekly contest prize.

Despite having a game included in the contest that will not be played until this coming weekend (Tarleton vs. Texas A&M Commerce), and thus only 14 games being scored, there were no perfect pickers.  >>Full Story<<

One little mistake can have significant consequences, especially where our football contest is involved. We don’t know whether the web site where we finally located the Tolar/Chico score was incorrectly posted, or whether the grader simply got the score reversed. In any event, we have to make a correction on last week’s contest results and announce a new Week 1 winner.  >>Full Story<<

Meridian’s Tony Allen ran for 189 yards on twelve carries, and scored seven touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets defeat a wounded DeLeon football team in varsity action at Meridian last Friday night by a score of 62-0.

The Bearcat Defense struggled to catch one of the states premier runners, and struggled to bring him down when they caught him. He broke as many as four tackles on one touchdown run.

The Bearcat sideline looked more like a battlefield triage than a football sideline. Players were on crutches, wore bandages, and were treated by medical professionals as the game proceeded. Going into the game with four key players out, DeLeon suffered at least two more troubling injuries during the contest.
Meanwhile, Allen scored on a 48 yard punt return, on carries of three, eight, 45, 52 and three yards, and on a screen pass for 59 yards.

DeLeon’s offense showed improvement in moving the football, but suffered from two key fumbles in the second quarter.
