Hico - The DeLeon Bearcat football team
struggled against a larger 2-A school, Hico last Friday night in a
41-0 defeat, loosing two starters from injuries in the first quarter.
The Cats fell behind as the Tigers scored early and often.
Chance Singleton and Hunter Golden went
out of the game with injuries and did not return.
“It was just not our night. It was a hard
night losing two starters,” said Bearcat head coach John Ward. “But,
we are going to stay positive and use this game as a stepping stone to
get better.
“It may be hard to see, but our
linebackers got better. There are other positives from the game. There
are some areas we made improvements. There are other areas we have to
improve in, and we know what those are.”

HIM UP. DeLeon gridironers surround and bring down a
Hico Tiger runner. |
Hico’s quarterback, Westin Williams threw
three touchdown passes and Jordan Turner ran in three touchdowns,
while the Bearcat offense struggled to get to the line.
The first defensive stand for DeLeon was
strong netting only seven yards. The Tigers punted to the 33 yard
line, and Kevin Smith carried it back to the Bearcat 47 yard line.
DeLeon’s first possession ended with a
fumble on the first play. The Tigers took over with only 44 yard to
the endzone. That distance was covered with one pass from Williams to
Cory Needham.
The Bearcats took the next kickoff and
went three-and-out. A bad snap caused a bad punt, leaving the Tigers
only 28 yards to pay dirt.
The Tigers pushed the ball to the 10 yard
line and Williams again hit Needham for a score.
The Bearcats kept the ball for four downs
after the kickoff, and another bad snap caused another bad punt. The
Tigers had a short field again, only 37 yards.
Pounding the ball to the 16 yard line,
Williams handed the ball to Jordan Turner, who carried it into the end
zone.
Penalties and a sack killed the Bearcats
next possession.
Hico scored on its next possession,
taking a 27-0 lead with 8:53 left in the second period. After another
four play Bearcat possession, Hico’s next possession ended in a quick
kick on second down when the signal from Head Coach Wade Williams was
confused by the quarterback.
Hico scored on its next possession,
driving the field from their own 22 yard line and running it in six
plays, scoring from the DeLeon four yard line.
The half ended with a score of 34-0.
Hico scored on the first play of the
second half on a 60 yard run, ending the scoring in the game.
“No one has lost confidence in this
team,” said Coach Ward. “No one has lost confidence in these coaches.
‘Respond’ is our key word this week. How are we going to respond?
“This is a good opportunity for our guys
to learn about life. You will have trials in life and you need to
respond in a positive way. You have to use the trials to get better.
“Our goal this week is to have a good
Monday, then Tuesday. If we respond to this loss and get better,
that’s what is most important.”
The DeLeon will be at home Friday night
against Meridian. |
