of the district and $0.0270 for debt service. >>Full Story<< |

VAN DYKE -- A relatively light agenda and
no closed, executive sessions produced one of the shortest Hospital
Board regular meetings in many months.
The approval of new contract forms for
clinic physicians and the hiring of a new chief financial officer
highlighted a meeting that featured generally favorable progress
reports. >>Full Story<< |

As the bell rang for the 2007-08
school year, enrollment for DeLeon ISD began the year with more
students than at the ending of the previous school year. As of
Friday, the district had enrolled and counted present 680
students. The enrollment at elementary stood at 283, Perkins
Middle School reported 196, and the high school had 201 students.
“The great news for our district is
that we did not lose any of the ground that was gained last year
in student enrollment and that we are actually ahead of last May’s
numbers by six students,” noted DeLeon Superintendent Dr. Randy
Mohundro.
Opening enrollment numbers for the
2006-07 year were 686, with 337 students at the elementary campus,
156 at Perkins Middle School, and 193 students at the high school
campus.
Steady enrollment numbers are
critical to a public school in the state of Texas due to state
funding being based on the number of students that attend a
school. Each student is worth approximately $5,000 in state funds
for district operations.
Historically, a few students will
also appear following the Labor Day holiday for their first day of
school so the district hopes to add a few more students to their
count following the holiday. |

Bill Burns of Gorman was the only
person to correctly figure out all 15 games in the Week 0 football
contest last week. Rocky Atchley came close with only a single
miss.
Nine contestants missed picking a
pair including Steve Chick in Eastland, David Lindsey, Brad
Sanders, Steve Baker, Terry Hodges, Josh Carruth, Stephen Riggs,
Barry Hooker and Buddy Sharp. The telephone company football pool
must have been close this week.
The average contestant for week zero
earned a “C” with the combined percentage being 76.7% correct.
The most games most often correctly picked included the wins by
Stephenville, Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The game most often
missed was the Millsap win over Perrin-Whitt, followed in turn by
DeLeon’s loss to Valley Mills and Comanche’s loss to Bangs. Many
were also surprised by Dublin’s win over Clifton. |

The DeLeon Bearcats lost at home to a
strong Valley Mills Eagles team Friday night in a lightening shortened
football game by a score of 27-7. The teams only played three quarters
before the game was called for safety reasons.
“I thought we played great defense at
first,” said head coach John Ward. “We struggled getting our rhythm on
offense. The first game is important to work on the right formula and
the personality of the team.”
Although the first quarter ended 0-0, the third quarter showed the
most promise for the Bearcats, both on offense and defense. >>Full Story<< |

A
SAFER HOSPITAL EXIT. Efforts to widen Highway 16 in front of
the new hospital with a left turn lane for southbound traffic that
began in the fall of 2005 have finally achieved success. The Texas
Department of Transportation’s construction project has apparently
been concluded with the paving and striping of the roadway last
week. Resolutions requesting the southbound turn lane were
approved by the Hospital District, the County Commissioners Court
and the City Councils of DeLeon and Comanche after several near
accidents occured at the hilltop hospital entrance when drivers
mistook the northbound exit lane as the regular traffic lane and
stopped in the actual opposing lane of traffic as they prepared to
enter the hospital parking lot. State Representative Sid Miller
provided significant aid to the safety project by helping TxDOT
locate supplemental funds to expedite the construction. In
February 2006 when TxDOT officials informed the hospital that the
project would soon be initiated, it was projected to start in
October of that year and be completed by February 2007. The cost
was estimated to be in the range of $450-500,000. Work didn’t
begin until late this spring, however, and frequent wet weather
delays pushed the completion back until late August. Despite
resolution requests for a hospital area speed limit reduction to
55 m.p.h., however, traffic is allowed to proceed across the hill
at the normal highway speed limit of 70 m.p.h. |

VANDALISM. Vandals destroyed more than 200 watermelons, valued
at $1.25 to $3 each, at the new DeLeon Area Produce Market
sometime between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m. Sunday morning. The
melons, which belonged to the Villarreal family, were thrown and
stomped and then scattered over the entire area. Shown are Pauline
Villarreal, and her children Gerardo, 5, and Geraline, 7, as they
begin the clean up process late Sunday morning. As of press time,
police were still investigating. |
