I have lived in the DeLeon area for about 18 years. I have three kids, Rusty, Buster and Chalie, with my wife of 20 years, Ruby.
I am a member of the DeLeon Volunteer Fire Department and the Peach and Melon Festival committee.
I would like to be elected to the City Council so I can continue to try and help our community in any way that I can. I want to see some projects already in progress finished and then see if we can help our youth a little more than we have in the past. I would also like to help more people get involved in the community and feel a little pride in doing so.

MID-DAY HOME FIRE. Around 10:45 a.m. Thursday, August 23, DeLeon Volunteer Firemen were called to a structure fire near the intersection of CR’s 454 & 494. Upon arrival they found the home of Mike and Jana Wright on fire. Although much of the home was filled with flames, the blaze was quickly extinguished once the fire hoses were put into action. No one was home when the fire started and the home was essentially a total loss. Fire Chief Doyle Rone said the State Fire Marshall’s office was asked to check the scene, something he described as a routine procedure in a fire of unknown origins.

SEALCOATING. A layer of sealcoating was applied to Reynosa Street, and a portion of McKinney Street, last Thursday. DeLeon Mayor Danny Owen noted that this was “tax-payer money in action” as funds for the coating was obtained from the 1/4 cent sales tax that the city collects.

GREETINGS. Dennis Otwell, Principal Judd Gibson and Jan Ward were in front of the DeLeon Elementary School bright and early Monday morning greeting students and parents on the first day of school. Among those who stopped to chat for a moment were Ireland Hugg, Liberty Hugg, and their grandmother, Kathryn Hugg.

FIRST DAY. Several students in Sharon Coan’s kindergarten class were busy coloring a picture of a school house Monday morning as they waited for the rest of their schoolmates to arrive for the first day of class. Facing the camera are Jaclynn Pierce and Manuel Villarreal.

DONATION. Sid Miller and Miller Nursery recently donated 12 crepe myrtles and two live oak trees for the RV park at the new community park. Shown above are Miller Nursery employees Rafael Ramirez and Arturo Leal, who delivered and planted the trees, and Karen Wilkerson, DeLeon city secretary.
