Fireworks were again a topic of discussion at the most recent regularly scheduled meeting of the DeLeon City Council, Thursday, July 26, 2007. During a previous meeting, Officer Robert Kluge had spoken to the Council regarding a possible conflict of interest involving Judge L.T. Lewis selling fire works.

All current Council members -- Gayle Stroud, Roy Dale Freeman, Norma Locke, Mayor Pro Tem Howard Gifford and Mayor Danny Owen -- were present for the meeting. Also participating were City Secretary Karen Wilkerson, Police Chief Ralph Dickey and Comanche County Emergency Management Coordinator Ray Helberg.   >>Full Story<<

A formal dedication ceremony, and cornerstone leveling, for Armstrong Lodge was held Thursday, July 26, at the new building on Hwy. 16.

Donald W. Broughton, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, welcomed all the visitors after a brief, private portion of the ceremony in which only members participated.

Broughton introduced several Eastern Star members from around the area, as well as local Lodge officers and dignitaries, and those from the Grand Lodge of Texas.   >>Full Story<<


The DeLeon City Council met in a special called session, Monday, July 30, 2007, to approve Ordinance No. 009-07; ordering the November 6, 2007 special election to fill the Place 3 City Council seat, due to the recent death of Councilman Benny Morris.

“All city residents who wish to apply as a candidate may pick up a packet from me, at City Hall,” said City Secretary Karen Wilkerson, “starting August 6, and until the close of business on September 5, 2007.”

According to Wilkerson, candidates must be at least 18 years of age and a registered voter.


FIRE ON CARNES STREET. DeLeon firemen direct two fire hoses toward a house on fire on Carnes Street early Saturday a.m. The house was unoccupied and was a total loss. There were no injuries and the origin of the fire is undetermined.

ALL DAY EFFORT. Early Friday morning, July 27, the reports starting coming in that an accident had occurred at the corner of Hwy. 6 and Hwy. 16 and that an 18-wheeler had been “broken in half.” As this photo shows, an 18-wheeler was involved, but there was no accident. According to the DeLeon Police Department, this heavily loaded trailer hauling scrap-metal from Comanche, collapsed shortly after attempting to make the turn onto Hwy. 6. There were no other vehicles involved. It took more than 12 hours to empty the truck and remove it from the scene.
