The DeLeon City Council met in a special
called session, Friday, July 13, 2007 to discuss and consider electric
bids for the city’s service.
The city, which has 36 meters, currently
uses TXU and paid more than $100,00 for electric service last year.
Council members had discussed the same
topic in two previous meetings, with Councilman Howard Gifford
expressing dismay at one point to learn that the city had most
recently been paying almost 18 cents per kilowatt hour.
Gifford also noted that although David
Bane, a TXU representative, said they tried to keep cities on the most
advantageous rate, they were now offering a plan that was “eight cents
a kilowatt hour lower.”
All together, city officials received bid
proposals from TXU, Alliance, Reliant, Liberty and Star Tex. During
the July 13 meeting, Frank Garza, with Liberty, was the only
representative present.
City Secretary Karen Wilkerson noted that
Liberty is an established firm, with an impressive list of customers.
“They have Wal-Mart, the Department of Defense, Olive Garden, U.S.
Department of Homeland Security, J.C. Penny, Eckerds and Auto Zone,”
she said.
After reviewing the contract, Mayor Danny
Owen asked, “what does everybody think?”
“I say go with the price,” Councilman Roy
Dale Freeman said.
“Yes,” Council member Gayle Stroud said.
She added, that Garza did a good job of explaining everything. “I
liked his approach,” she said.
Councilman Gifford then made motion to
switch the city’s electric service to Liberty, and the vote to approve
was unanimous. |
