COMANCHE -- Officials gathered in the
County Courthouse on Friday, June 29, as the County Commissioners met
in an emergency meeting to discuss road and bridge conditions and seek
financial aid as the result of recent flooding.
On the previous day, June 28, Judge James
Arthur had signed an order declaring that a state of disaster existed
in Comanche County. The order noted that the County’s Emergency
Management Plan had been implemented and that it would remain in
effect for seven days unless extended by action of the Commissioners
Court. >>Full Story<< |

Two DeLeon area residents were rescued by
DeLeon Volunteer Firemen from flood waters on the Leon River last
Wednesday, June 27. The second, and more dramatic rescue, involved one
of their own.
Around 9:45 a.m. DeLeon Volunteer Firemen
were called out for a high water rescue on CR 454 at the Leon River

FLOODING ON THE LEON RIVER. This photo was taken from the Leon
River bridge on Highway 16 last Wednesday afternoon, at the same
time as fireman Mike Murphy was stranded in the river a few miles
upstream. The waterflow shown is not in the main channel of the
river, but is still powerful enough to wash out a rather
substantial water diversion dam and concrete reinforced fencing. |

WATER EROSION CAUSES
PAVEMENT COLLAPSE. Early Monday afternoon, July 2, this Texas
Department of Transportation dump truck was attempting to drop a
load of topsoil along a washed out culvert on Highway 16, between
Duncan Creek and Highway 420, when the pavement on the roadway
shoulder collapsed and the truck fell into the newly created
chasm. According to Efrain Almodova, the TxDOT official on the
scene, the driver was not hurt. He would not release the driver's
name, however. Comanche County Emergency Services Coordinator Ray
Helberg requests area citizens to call his office at 325-356-5805
to report dangerous road and bridge conditions. |
