COMANCHE -- Officials gathered in the County Courthouse on Friday, June 29, as the County Commissioners met in an emergency meeting to discuss road and bridge conditions and seek financial aid as the result of recent flooding.

On the previous day, June 28, Judge James Arthur had signed an order declaring that a state of disaster existed in Comanche County. The order noted that the County’s Emergency Management Plan had been implemented and that it would remain in effect for seven days unless extended by action of the Commissioners Court.  >>Full Story<<

VAN DYKE -- The DeLeon Hospital and Clinic buildings, which have been closed for almost two years and last served as a refuge for hurricane evacuees, will likely soon see much activity and new life as a part of the DeLeon Independent School District.

This and budgetary and financial matters were the most notable items discussed or acted upon in public session in a meeting that was dominated by an approximately three hour closed executive session in which several different topics were considered.  >>Full Story<<

Two DeLeon area residents were rescued by DeLeon Volunteer Firemen from flood waters on the Leon River last Wednesday, June 27. The second, and more dramatic rescue, involved one of their own.

Around 9:45 a.m. DeLeon Volunteer Firemen were called out for a high water rescue on CR 454 at the Leon River crossing. Glenda Hargrove had become trapped in her stalled pickup as she attempted to cross rising floodwaters. Water levels reached almost to window height before she was rescued at around 10:45 a.m.  >>Pictures & Full Story<<

FLOODING ON THE LEON RIVER. This photo was taken from the Leon River bridge on Highway 16 last Wednesday afternoon, at the same time as fireman Mike Murphy was stranded in the river a few miles upstream. The waterflow shown is not in the main channel of the river, but is still powerful enough to wash out a rather substantial water diversion dam and concrete reinforced fencing.

WATER EROSION CAUSES PAVEMENT COLLAPSE. Early Monday afternoon, July 2, this Texas Department of Transportation dump truck was attempting to drop a load of topsoil along a washed out culvert on Highway 16, between Duncan Creek and Highway 420, when the pavement on the roadway shoulder collapsed and the truck fell into the newly created chasm. According to Efrain Almodova, the TxDOT official on the scene, the driver was not hurt. He would not release the driver's name, however. Comanche County Emergency Services Coordinator Ray Helberg requests area citizens to call his office at 325-356-5805 to report dangerous road and bridge conditions.
