Multiple electric power service
interruptions have occurred in the vicinities of DeLeon and Gorman
communities over the last several months. A large number of these
interruptions are attributed to factors related to the Oncor (TXU)
owned transmission lines that serve these communities.
Lightning strikes and birds making
contact between one of the power line phases and a non-energized part
of the transmission structure have accounted for a significant
majority of the recent outages. >>Full Story<< |

The focus was on city infrastructure and
public works and related Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
issues at the most recent meeting of the DeLeon City Council,
Thursday, June 21.
Council members Howard Gifford, Norma
Locke, Roy Dale Freeman and Gayle Stroud were present, with Benny
Morris absent due to illness. There were no citizen’s presentations.
Mayor Danny Owen, Karen Wilkerson, city secretary, and Rob Duncan,
public works administrator, also participated.
Prior to the TCEQ discussion, several
individuals spoke to the council requesting permission to have a
tractor pull on the American Legion property of the Festival grounds. >>Full Story<< |

COMANCHE -- An upgrade of the emergency
notification system that allows courthouse employees to quickly
request law enforcement assistance was the largest single expenditure
approved in Commissioners Court on Monday.
Other topics of discussion in the
relatively uneventful meeting included the appointment of a Mass Care
Coordinator, revisions to the County's personnel policy manual, phone
bills for the Department of Public Safety's Drivers License office and
road materials donated to the county by the Texas Department of
Transportation. >>Full Story<< |

GETTING READY TO GO UPSTAIRS. DeLeon volunteer fireman Mark
Nowlin, wearing the oxygen mask, prepares to climb the ladder back
into the attic at Larry and Linda Keith¹s home in the wee hours of
Tuesday morning after a lighting strike caused a fire. The firemen
were successful in extinguishing the flames before significant
fire damage occurred. The lighting did create a large hole in the
Keith¹s roof, and other damage inside the home, however. |

TRACTOR PULL. Jack Abbe and Heath Matteson are shown here
talking to Buddy Robinson, of Weatherford, shortly before the
Texas Truck and Tractor Puller’s Association pull last Saturday
night in DeLeon. The event, with more than 40 “hooks” attracted
people from nearby towns and proved beneficial to the local Boy
Scouts, who received half the gate receipts, and the DeLeon
Livestock Association, who had the concessions. Several DeLeon
residents competed in the pull, including Lynn Chupp, Cory Chupp,
Josh Hodges, Klinton Hardin, Taner Winkles, Shane Lindley, Jamie
Gilder, Jeff Auvenshine, Mike Murphy, Matthew Locke, David Lindley
and M.J. Stewart. |

HIGH
AND RISING WATER. This was the scene early Tuesday morning at
Promontory Park on Proctor Lake, with the dam shown in the
background, as floodwaters continue to pour into the flood control
lake. Flood waters in the area caused Highways 36 and 1477 near
Sipe Springs and Highway 679 between Duster and Gorman to be
closed to traffic, with more rain predicted and additional
flooding expected. Floodwaters caused another break in the fiber
optic cable that connects Comanche County Telephone and Mid-Tex
Cellular to the rest of the world causing cell phone, long
distance and internet service problems in the area. |
