COMANCHE -- After a marathon meeting two weeks earlier, the Comanche County Commissioners held a relatively brief meeting on Monday, June 11, with a relatively light agenda for consideration.

County Judge James Arthur presided and Commissioners Garry Steele, Kenneth Feist, Bobby Schuman and Jimmy Dale Johnson attended and participated. Other county officials involved in the meeting included County Clerk Ruby Lesley, County Auditor Joey Boswell, County Treasurer Billy Ruth Rust, County Sheriff Jeff Lambert, County Emergency Services Coordinator Ray Helberg and County Constable Mark McDonald.

Following the invocation and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, the first order of business was a request from Regina Johnson, head of the 220th District Court's Community Supervision and Corrections. Johnson requested that emergency law enforcement pager buttons be available to her staff of adult probationers, the same as is currently installed in various courthouse offices.   >>Full Story<<

FIRE DEPARTMENT BBQ. The annual DeLeon Volunteer Fire Department BBQ drew many hungry, and grateful, residents last Saturday night, including Peggy Penn, Janice Simpson and Pete Penn. Behind the table, helping to serve (along with many other DVFD members not pictured), was Chief Doyle Rone. Chief Rone reported that although total numbers were down this year, the fund-raiser resulted in a net profit of $4,500 for the department. He also reported that the money would be used to help build a new brush fire fighting truck with foam capabilities.

LUCKY! Although it’s hard to believe from looking at this photo, the driver of the pickup above, John Fair, of DeLeon, escaped this two-vehicle accident with only minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Toby Morris, of DeLeon, also received only minor injuries. Morris’ vehicle, not visible in this photo, landed upside down on the opposite side of the road, some distance away from the scene. The accident occurred last Friday afternoon, June 8, on Highway 16, just north of Comanche. Comanche County Commissioner Bobby Schuman was one of the first people on the scene and immediately called for law enforcement assistance and an ambulance, and also directed traffic.
