DeLeon High School’s Head Football Coach, John Ward, expressed satisfaction with the games to be played in the coming football season.

The 2007 football schedule, which was released on Monday, looks a lot like the 2006 schedule, only with the game sites reversed.

The Bearcats will begin action at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, at Bearcat Stadium with a scrimmage against Hamilton. The second scrimmage will be played in Evant on Thursday, August 23, with a 7:30 p.m. start time that will remain in effect for the balance of the season.

Regular season non-district games include Valley Mills at DeLeon on August 31, Hico at Hico on September 7, Meridian at Meridian on September 14, and the Homecoming game against Dublin Lions on September 21.

The next week, September 28, is an open date for the ‘Cats as they rest and retool for district play.
District play begins with a trip to Tolar on October 5, followed by hosting Ranger on October 12. On October 19 the Bearcats travel to Perrin-Whitt and return home the following week to host Santo on October 26. A short trip west on Highway 6 on November 2 will end in Gorman against the Panthers, and then the final game before the playoffs begin will be a home contest against the Cross Plains Buffaloes.

Coach Ward didn’t predict any of the 2007 contests to be easy. He noted that Valley Mills, a semi-finalist last year, would be very competitive. Hico was a 2A playoff team and Meridian was a 1A playoff team. Dublin, a big 2A team, will be very competitive.

The district was described by Coach Ward as evenly balanced and tougher than last year. “Everybody looks even,” was his general description. He said that Gorman has everybody back and expressed respect for Tolar, Ranger and the rest.

Despite the toughness throughout the district, Ward hopes for the Bearcats to be the number one or two pre-season pick, and adds that he feels confident that DeLeon will be in the top three.

“We have a lot of wood to be chopped and a lot of questions to be answered,” Coach Ward volunteered, “but it should be a fun and exciting season!”
