Good afternoon faculty, family, friends
and members of the Class of 2007. Welcome to the celebration of the
end of our DeLeon school careers. This day is a testament to the
dedication that we have given to our school.
Although the future is never a guarantee,
the past is always a certainty. It happens without our consent, and
without reason. DeLeon High School will always be our history, Class
of 2007, and it is always something to be proud of.
William Faulkner once wrote, “The past is
not a diminishing road, but instead, a large meadow which no winter
ever quite touches.” Today, the gate which divides our past and future
is closing to allow us to move on to the next meadow in our lives.
Although the gate is closed, the memories are still present. It is
being closed merely to preserve the time that we have had here.
As a class, we have seen a great many
things occur in the world around us. We have welcomed the new
millennium together, endured the tragedy of September 11th, and
witnessed the Supreme Court be the deciding factor in a presidential
election for the first time ever. Through all of these big events, we
have also been through some somewhat smaller things of our own doing.
However, we have been fortunate to be genuinely close as a class,
which is a rarity. Our affection for each other is frozen in memory
and we will always look back fondly at the true friends we have had
here.
Now is the time to remove ourselves from
our lives at DeLeon High School to find our own place in this world.
As much as some of us wanted to press fast forward on our high school
careers to be sitting where we are today, just as many wanted to make
it last as long as possible. Either way, time continued on, and here
we are. This will not change as we enter into the world; time will
continue to pass just as it always has. There is nothing we can do to
change this, so we must do what we can with every day that we are
given. Time will progress if you are out doing what you truly enjoy,
but it will also progress if it is wasted as you cower in a dark hole.
Class of 2007, I hope that we make the
most of the time that we are given and do something with meaning
during our lives.
Go out into the world and be proud of
where you came from, the small town where you have been surrounded by
people who truly care about you. Show your gratitude to the world by
doing something with all of your heart, to give back to society, and
never forget the people beside you, as we will always be The Class of
2007. |
