The DeLeon ISD Board of Trustees met for
a brief regular monthly meeting on May 15, 2007.
The agenda included all matters related
to the May 12 election, however all of those matters were held due to
having to wait for provisional ballots to be certified and counted.
Those final results were not available for the Board to take action on
the election, and a special meeting was scheduled for Monday, May 21
at the district central office for the sole purpose of canvassing the
election results.
The regular June meeting agenda will
include the swearing-in of newly elected and reelected trustees and
the election of Board officers for the coming year.
Following the adoption of the consent
agenda, the Board entered into closed session to consider personnel
issues. After returning from closed session, the administration
recommended that a contract for the 2007-08 school year be extended to
Maggie Thayer. The recommendation was accepted unanimously by the
Board.
As matters of discussion, it was noted
that the district depository contract was near the end of its current
term. Due to the large amount of money that the district is currently
investing locally, the district will seek new bids for the contract.
Those bids will be reviewed and a decision made on the issue at the
next regular board meeting.
It was announced during the discussion
section of the meeting that the DISD is currently in negotiations with
Texas State Technical College to begin offering college level
technical courses at DeLeon High School beginning in the fall. DISD
will begin offering Cisco Networking which will allow students to
obtain their Cisco Certification for Networking as college credit this
fall. The course work will be open to juniors and seniors interested
in taking the program. The district is also working with TSTC in
finding other courses, including welding, computer science, and
food/nutrition, which can be counted for dual credit purposes and
allow students to earn college credit.
The administration noted that all tuition
expenses for classes offered during the regular school year would be
paid by the district. The district’s end goal of the program is to
allow students to acquire up to 60 college credit hours at no personal
expense. The new high school allotment provided by the state is being
used by the district to provide students the incentive to begin their
college education and complete as much of it as possible prior to
graduating from high school. The district has been offering academic
college courses in cooperation with Ranger College and will continue
to offer those classes as well as the new technical classes with TSTC.
The canvassing meeting of the Board was
held on Monday, May 21st. At that meeting the members present accepted
the results of the election. Reelected for another three year term on
the Board was Kelly Dickey and Becky Golden, and Brad Sanders was
elected for full three year term. Sanders will take the place of Janet
McGinnis who was appointed last summer to fill an unexpired term. The
results of the bond issue were also canvassed, with the issue not
passing by a total of 51 votes based on the final results, including
counted provisional ballots. |
