TAINTED PEACHES? This is an emptied can of peaches which were suspected to have caused food poisoning at DeLeon Elementary.

A gallon can of peaches opened and served at the DeLeon Elementary cafeteria for lunch last Thursday, April 26, was the prime suspect on Friday as the cause of a student who became ill and was later taken to Comanche County Medical Center with food poisoning suspected. Numerous other elementary students missed school with illness on Friday, as well, some of whom who had also been absent on Thursday when the suspect peaches were served.

The liquid in which the peaches were canned was reported to have been cloudy. When another can in the same case was opened, it reportedly reacted with the air and formed bubbles. All of the remaining cans in the case of peaches were then opened and poured out.

Another case of peaches with the same batch number were located at the Perkins Middle School cafeteria. They were shipped back to the manufacturer for testing.

On Monday, April 30, DeLeon ISD Superintendent Randy Mohundro issued the following health update:

“The health issue that arose on Friday due to the possibility of food poison is still under investigation. The State Department of Health was on site today, April 30, and found no major problems with the elementary cafeteria or its operation.

“The food items in question have been sent to the manufacturer for testing.

“There have been several cases of a virus reported, but these cases have not been related to the cafeteria. These cases have involved not only students, but also non-school age children and adults related to students who have become ill.

“We will continue to monitor and assess the situation. The health of the students of this district is a major priority that is taken very seriously.”
