Sales tax receipts reported by the State Comptroller’s office are often used as a broad measure of a local economy. The first four months of 2007 for DeLeon’s sales tax receipts trail the corresponding 2006 totals by just under 3%.

The year started off on a high note as January receipts were more than 11% ahead of one year earlier. Since that time, however, the year-to-year trend again turned negative.

DeLeon’s decline is not nearly as steep, however, as has been the case for the rest of Comanche County. The county’s sales tax receipts for the first four months are 17% behind the prior year, and for the City of Comanche, the decline is almost 9%.

The closing of the Blue Moon Cafe downtown in July 2006 is believed to have had a negative impact on the DeLeon sales tax receipts. Other factors contributing to the relatively small decline could include general economic conditions.
