Things got busy Monday near the 5 p.m. deadline for filing for the May 12 elections, with several contestants filing in the last hour.

In the City Council race, Marion Quade, Benny Morris and Fred Turner filed for the Place 3 position currently held by Johnnye Howell, who did not seek re-election. Avery Carlisle, the incumbent, and Roy Dale Freeman, both filed for Place 4. Gayle Stroud filed for Place 5 and will run unopposed. Stroud was appointed by the Council last week to complete the Place 5 term of John Holdridge, who moved to Tyler.

Four incumbents filed for places on the Comanche County Medical Center board: Karen Carr, Place 2; Gale Easley, Place 3; Joe Locke, Place 4, and Charles Mazurek, Place 5. Mary Jane Atkins, Place 1, and John Mack Weaver, Place 6, did not seek re-election. Jana Morris, Gayland Daugherty and Marvin McKinnon each filed for Place 1; and Billy Ray Evans and Cedric Bettis both filed for Place 6. Dr. Beau McCrory filed for Place 2 and will run against incumbent Karen Carr. Gale Easley, Place 3, will run unopposed, as will Charles Mazurek, Place 4, and Joe Locke, Place 5.

The race for the three positions on the DISD board of trustees drew three new candidates, Laura Brown, Dwight Dold and Brad Sanders, and incumbents Kelly Dickey and Becky Golden. The three DISD candidates receiving the most votes will be elected. Voters will also be asked to approve $8 million in school bonds to construct a new high school and make other renovations and improvements.

The election is scheduled for May 12, with early voting by personal appearance beginning Monday, April 30 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at City Hall, and ending on Tuesday, May 8.

The Free Press will be pleased to run photos and campaign statements, at no charge, for anyone running for local office.
