The Festival Park project and a possible new high school were the primary topics of discussion at the most recent City Council meeting, Thursday, February 22. Councilman Avery Carlisle was absent, and John Holdrige’s recent resignation (due to a move) left the council with only four voting members.

Mayor Danny Owen did announce, towards the end of the meeting, that he’d asked former council member Gayle Stroud to fill in for Holdridge, place 5, until the election.  >>Full Story<<

COMANCHE – The old iron bridge over Jimmys Creek on CR 103 near Sidney may have to stay where it is. It had previously been planned for removal and to be placed over a draw in the new DeLeon city park as a pedestrian bridge.

Fain McDaniel, chairman of the Comanche County Historical Commission, told the Commissioners Court on Monday that he had been advised by the Texas Department of Transportation that the bridge has been deemed as “historical” and must be preserved in place as is.  >>Full Story<<

CAN YOU SPOT THE WATER TOWER? The dust from west Texas was thick in the air on Saturday afternoon, blocking visibility beyond a few hundred yards. The high winds caused tree and property damage and helped create numerous wildfires around the area and a wide swath of north Texas. Winds blew consistently at around 40 miles per hour with gusts approaching 60 mph.

BIG FIRE AT BEATTIE . Rick Choate parked his pickup near the barn on his farm just north of Beattie last Wednesday, February 21, and a few minutes later noticed a fire underneath the truck. He saved his truck from burning, but the windy conditions and dry grass caused the fire to quickly spread. Here we see one of the first DeLeon brush fire trucks starting to work on the large fire. Volunteer fire fighters from Sipe Springs, Gorman, Comanche and Promontory soon joined in the fight to deal with a stubborn fire that spread onto the woods and pastures of adjoining properties to the north. Although the fire was controlled late in the day, it burned around 150-200 acres. It also sprang back to life on the following day requiring additional firefighter work.

CR 413 WILDFIRE. A construction power line near a home under construction behind where this photo was taken, apparently sparked a large wildfire while under the influence of Saturday¹s exceptionally strong winds. The fire quickly spread eastward and threatened another home on the far hilltop. The roof is barely visible in the trees. The DeLeon VFD tanker truck is visible on the road, with a CCMC ambulance, a DPS cruiser and other fire fighting vehicles also in the smoky, dusty background. Fortunately, the blaze was contained before any serious damage or injuries occurred.
