The annual DeLeon Chamber of Commerce Banquet is scheduled for Monday, January 29, at Prado’s beginning 7 p.m.

McCullouch County Judge Randy Young will be the featured speaker, and according to Chamber manager Barbara Helberg, Young is a rural economic development specialist.

“I understand that Judge Young presents a very interesting program,” Helberg said. “I haven’t seen him speak, but Karen Wilkerson (city secretary) and Gayle Stroud (former council member) did, and they just loved him.”

The promotional material for Young will certainly get your attention -- he’s an avid bicycle rider, drag racer, restores antique cars and street rods, builds wind-powered electrical generators, designs recumbent bicycles, has adapted his automobile to run on used cooking oil, and is building a 400 square foot “tree cabin” 40 feet above the Colorado River.

Randy Young topics for keynote addresses and banquets include CPR for Tiny Towns -- Motivation and creative techniques to revive the economy of small towns and make them thrive; Out-of-the-Box Ideas for Out-of-This-World Fuel Costs -- Innovative ideas like running vehicles on old fry oil and a real-world review of the future potential of renewable fuels; A View from the Bench -- A humorous and inspiring look at justice from the perspective of a small town judge; Adding Margin to your Life -- A judge’s pronouncement for lowering stress in today’s fast-paced world; and The 5 % Difference -- A motivational look at how to raise your life from the mundane to one of daily passion and excitement.

“He does a great presentation,” said Wilkerson, going on to describe a Young scenario involving a fishbowl and water. “He’s entertaining, but he’s also very informative. He has you really thinking when it’s over.”

“And, of course, we’ll also announce the recipients of the ‘Outstanding Citizens’ awards,” Helberg said. “This is also a great opportunity to get to see your friends. Everyone always seems to have a good time visiting with each other at the banquet.”

Tickets for the banquet are $15 each and may be purchased at the Chamber office or at the door.
“This is not just a Chamber member’s event,” Helberg said, “Everyone is welcome, and we encourage everyone to come.”
