Another very successful DeLeon Livestock
Show was staged last Saturday, January 6, for the DeLeon FFA and 4-H
by the DeLeon Livestock Association members and the DeLeon High School
Ag Science teachers.
The weather was ideal - cool in the
morning, warming to mild in the afternoon, and no high winds.
The facilities were in excellent
condition, thanks to an obviously large amount of work and planning by
the show’s producers. The bleachers inside the show barn were
rearranged to provide less crowded stadium seating. A new DeLeon
Livestock Association sign was painted, showing a more modern
representation of typical show animals.
In the barn area behind the show arena, a
new area was created for photographing the exhibitors and their
winning animals. A backdrop and signs were hung to provide an improved
photographic backdrop. The new arrangement allowed the show to proceed
without waiting for photos to be taken, however, due to the increased
pace of the show and to some exhibitors showing multiple animals in
successive classes, some photos were missed. We apologize to those few
who did not get their championship photos taken.
The show judge for 2006 was Leslie
Harris, Ag Science teacher from Breckenridge. Most remarks heard at
the show regarding the judge were complimentary. There has never been
a show judge that pleased everyone, however.
Harris was, in turn, very complimentary
of the young exhibitors and livestock that he saw at the show,
commenting at one point that he was glad that we were not in his home
county.
DeLeon High School Principal Mark Lewis
served as the show’s announcer and Perkins Middle School Principal
Scott Carlisle served as the records keeper.
The Comanche County Livestock Show will
be held on Saturday, January 13, and on Monday, January 15. The
weather is currently projected to be very cold, possibly accompanied
by freezing precipitation, so the “warm-up” provided in the local show
may be needed.
