The decision to “sever all ties with John
McDaniel effective immediately” was arguably the most interesting
decision made by the DeLeon City Council Tuesday night, November 28,
in a meeting which had been postponed from Thursday night, due to the
Thanksgiving holiday.
Councilman Avery Carlisle made the motion
immediately following an executive session for “Evaluation of Police
Chief John McDaniel” and the vote was unanimous. No explanation was
given, and McDaniel left immediately, but during the “accounts
payable” portion of the meeting several purchases made by Chief
McDaniel -- including shotguns, digital cameras and uniforms -- were
discussed, as was the possibility of perhaps returning the items.
These were no indications that these purchases were involved in their
decision to let McDaniel go. Later, Mayor Danny Owen released a brief
statement in which he said McDaniel was discharged during his
probationary period, for “not meeting the City Council’s
expectations.” >>Full Story<< |

VAN DYKE -- Financial matters and
operating performance dominated the discussion at the regular monthly
meeting of the Comanche County Consolidated Hospital District's Board
of Directors on Tuesday, November 28. The Board serves as the
governing body of the Comanche County Medical Center (CCMC).
Five of six directors were present at the
meeting. Board president Charles Mazurek conducted the meeting, with
members Mary Jane Atkins, Gale Easley, John Mack Weaver and Joe Locke
participating. Karen Carr was absent. >>Full Story<< |

DeLeon’s Country Christmas is scheduled
for this Friday, December 8, in the City Hall auditorium.
The DeLeon High School Band will perform
at 5:30 in front of City Hall and Santa is scheduled to arrive at 6
p.m. in a covered wagon pulled by “Dollie” the mule. Riley’s Studio
will take Santa pictures, and the DeLeon Theater Troupe will be
available for photos with “The Grinch.”
An “ornament contest booth” is also
planned, where children can decorate an ornament for $1. At 8:30 these
ornaments will be judged and prizes will be awarded in two age groups
-- 3 to 5 year olds and 1st-6th grades.
Carla Landreth will sign copies of her
new book, “Silk Stocking Road” throughout the night. A chili supper
will also be available, prepared by Nicky Wilkerson.
Event organizers also expect “lots of
craft and food vendors” plus many other things to do.
“Bring the family out for an evening of
fun,” said Barbara Helberg, Chamber of Commerce manager.

WINTER
WONDERLAND. Last week's brief weather "event" was hazardous
and stressful for some, and an absolute delight for others. Lilly
and Baxter Krug, who live next door to the Free Press office, were
obviously among those who found the ice and snow delightful, as
they¹re pictured here jumping on their trampoline during the worst
(or best) of it. |

PAVILION FINISHED. During the most recent City Council meeting
it was noted that Teague Welding had completed work on the
pavilion at the DeLeon Community Festival Gardens Park in record
time. Note how small the tractor looks compared to the pavilion. |
