The Bearcats traveled to Dublin this past Friday night where they tried to spoil the Lion’s Homecoming.

The Bearcats showed flashes of brilliance in the second quarter, but were unable to stop a Dublin offense that was able to pile up nearly 400 yards of total offense.

Dublin struck first on two touchdown passes in the first quarter to take an early 16-0 lead over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats would wake up in the second quarter and take a 20-16 lead as they were able to capitalize on three Dublin turnovers. M.J. Stewart would score two touchdowns and L.C. Williams would score a touchdown as well.

It looked like the Bearcats would enter the locker room with the lead for the first time this season, but a costly interception gave the Lions great field position and a chance to score before the half.

Dublin took advantage of the Bearcat miscue and scored on a screen pass just before time ran out to reclaim the lead with a 23-20 score.

DeLeon was unable to achieve any offensive push in the second half while the Lions would go on to score 23 points in the second half of play and finish the game with a 46-20 win over the Bearcats.

“We need to be able to put four quarters together,” said Coach John Ward. “I know that we will get there.”

“I don’t doubt the abilities of any of my players or coaches,” added Ward. “We just need to get more consistent and work at winning every play.”

The Bearcats were led offensively by M.J. Stewart who rushed for 41 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Defensively, Kevin Smith led the team with 13 tackles while Williams also contributed with three interceptions.

The Bearcats will take this Friday night off and look to regroup for their first district game that will be played against Tolar on October 6. The game will be here with a starting time of 7:30 p.m.

“This is the start of a new season,” said Coach Ward. “This is the season that counts.”

Tolar, on the other hand, will not have this week off as they will be playing Cross Plains for their first district game. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and will be played in Tolar.
