After two weeks in DeLeon, Police Chief John McDaniel, Jr. is starting to settle in to the recently vacated chief’s office at the police station.

A desk was delivered last week, and extra chairs will arrive soon. McDaniel’s diplomas and certificates grace one wall, while an extensive collection of law enforcement patches hangs on another. Various police officer memorabilia and Marine Corps collectables are grouped on counter-tops. We have received notes and heard various comments regarding the new Bearcat logo being used on shirts worn by school employees. Here is Dr. Mohundro's statement regarding the new Bearcat.

To the Free Press:

There is some degree of concern coming from numerous individuals regarding the new “logo” that is being utilized by the school district. Let me give you some background on what has and is occurring. In working with companies to secure a “bearcat” for various uses, I found out that most companies do not have a stock “bearcat” to be used. In looking at them I saw a variety of things from tigers to wildcats, but saw nothing that was consistent.

The ad valorem or property tax is the single most important source of local government revenue.

Property taxes totaling nearly $31 billion were levied in Texas during 2004, the most recent year for which statistics are available, by approximately 3,800 local taxing units. More than 50% if the total property tax levy was imposed by school districts.  >>Full Story<<


HOMECOMING QUEEN AND KING.

Flor Maria Reyna, the 17 year old daughter of Domingo and Rita Reyna,was named Homecoming Queen, and Jeremy Lindley, the son of Jeff Lindley and Jeri Li Thompson, were named Homecoming Queen and King during the pre-game ceremonies at this year’s Homecoming game, Friday, September 15. Flor Maria was escorted by her father, Domingo Reyna, and Jeremy was escorted by his mother, Jeri Li.

COMING HOME QUEEN

Peggy Mitchell, a 1956 graduate of DeLeon High School, was named Coming Home Queen during the pre-game ceremonies at this year’s Homecoming game, Friday, September 15. She was escorted by her husband, Don Mitchell, also a 1956 DHS graduate.

BAND SWEETHEART

Monica Gonzales, the 17 year old daughter of Emma and Ernest Gonzales, was named 2006 DHS Band Sweetheart during the pre-game ceremonies at this year’s Homecoming game, Friday, September 15. Her escort was Cameron Canterbury, senior band president. Cameron is the son of Joe and Adell Canterbury.

FFA SWEETHEART

Selina Walker, the 16 year old daughter of Larry and Melinda Walker, was named 2006 FFA Sweetheart during the pre-game ceremonies at this year’s Homecoming game, Friday, September 15. Her escort was Josh Beaty, FFA vice president. Josh is the son of Tim and Cindy Beaty.

FOOTBALL SWEETHEART

Lyndi Levisay, daughter of Billy and Vicki Lee and Lonnie and Crystal Levisay, was named 2006 Football Sweetheart during half-time ceremonies at the Homecoming game, Friday, September 15. Her escorts were Gustavo Calzada, son of Merecedes and Gustavo Calzada, and John Carruth, son of Don and Cecila Carruth.
