According to Comanche County Judge James R. Arthur, Comanche County “went back under the Restricted Burn Ban” for a 72 hour period, which began at 7 a.m. September 6, 2006.

“The area fire chiefs will contact Central Dispatch every morning around 7 a.m. and determine if burns will be allowed that day,” Judge Arthur said. “They will be looking at winds of less than 10 mph and humidity greater than 50 percent.”

Judge Arthur said that citizens in the county should call Central Dispatch at 325-356-2222 to request permission. There will be a limited number of burns in each area each day. Arthur noted that if you are told you cannot burn that day, call back the next day and “we will get to you.”

Judge Arthur also released the following guidelines.

• Please DO NOT CALL 911, this is for emergencies only.

• You should ignite your burns in the morning and have them in the smolder state by evening. NO fires should be set after 1 p.m. State law forbids burning after dark.

Please do not get angry at our dispatchers if you are denied your request, they do not make the rules. Call your local fire chief if you have a complaint. Citizens inside the cities of DeLeon and Comanche should call their local fire marshall.

• The property owner is liable for any property damage in the event the fire gets out of control.

VAN DYKE -- The Board of Directors of the Comanche County Consolidated Hospital District, the governing authority of the Comanche County Medical Center and Doctors Medical Clinic, met in regular session on Tuesday, August 29, to set a proposed property tax rate for 2006, among other matters.

Two directors, John Mack Weaver and Mary Jane Atkins, were absent. The meeting was chaired by Charles Mazurek with directors Joe Locke, Gale Easley and Karen Carr comprising the balance of the quorum.   >>Full Story<<

According to Edith Brownlee, it took a little effort, but she is now quite adept at using a computer. “Four years ago, my grandson gave me this computer,” Brownlee said. “I just had to learn how to use it. It wasn’t easy learning to use a computer at my age, but I just did it.”

That attitude seems to have been a trait Brownlee shared with her ancestors.

“I was born July 31, 1917,” Brownlee said. “I’ve been around a long time. When I was born, they guessed that I probably weighed three pounds.” She said that hopes for her survival were slim at the time.   >>Full Story<<
