The issue of City street repairs provided the most discussion at the DeLeon City Council meeting of August 9, 2006.

All council members were present for the 6 p.m. beginning except Avery Carlisle, who was absent due to his responsibilities as Peach and Melon Festival chairman. Karen Wilkerson, City Secretary, was also absent due to a training session in the metroplex.  >>Full Story<<

COMANCHE -- A lengthy agenda produced a long meeting for the Comanche County Commissioners on Monday, August 14.

An interlocal agreement between the County and its three cities regarding emergency management and consideration of increases in constable fees were among the more notable action items.  >>Full Story<<

MISS DELEON 2006. Selena Walker was named Miss DeLeon, late Saturday night at the Festival Stage and was immediately crowned by Mayor Danny Owen.

SLICING THE FIRST MELON. Peach and Melon Festival Committee chairman Avery Carlisle joins Peach and Melon Festival Queen Kristen Powell as the first ceremonial melon was sliced. Two truckloads of chilled watermelons were sliced and handed out to a hot, eager crowd downtown late Saturday afternoon.

SEED SPITTERS. These nine people were the best of the bunch Saturday, during the Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest sponsored by the Free Press. In the 10 and under group, front row, from the left, Rhegan Howard, 8, of DeLeon, took first place with a spit of 28’ 8”; Cassidy Zajicek, 9, of Columbus, placed second with a spit of 28’; and Luke Broussard, 10, of May, took third with a spit of 24’7”. In the 11 to 20 age group, Kolby Powell, 14, of DeLeon, took first place with a spit of 35’10”; Brandon Baker, 11, of Glen Rose, placed second with a spit of 27’3.5” and Nikki Fitzgerald took third with 26’.05”. In the 21 and over division Kenneth Reid, 42, of Cleburne, took first place with a spit of 53’1.5”; second place went to Jo Swenson, 40, of Arlington, with a spit of 44’3”; and Perry McNair, 40, of DeLeon, won third place with a spit of 42’ 3”.
