VAN DYKE -- A loan for a newly graduated
physician from the area who is beginning a three year residency in
family practice medicine, the sale of the old DeLeon Nursing Home
building, a charge that the hospital violated a medical privacy law
and authorization for an initial investigation of a new construction
project at the hospital campus were among the more notable topics in a
busy directors meeting at Comanche County Medical Center (CCMC) last
week.
The Board of the Comanche County
Consolidated Hospital District met in regular session on Tuesday, June
27, following a noon public hearing on the District's budget for the
coming fiscal year. All Board members were eventually present at the

HAMILTON -- The Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality (TCEQ) held its final meeting with the
recognized stakeholders in the Leon River Bacteria Total Maximum Daily
Load (TMDL) Project on Wednesday afternoon, June 28.
TCEQ officials explained that the model
that forms the basis for the entire river cleanup study is nearing
completion. They held the meeting to hear and answer more questions
regarding their effort to lower the maximum bacterial load in the
river in order that it be able to meet standards set by the federal
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Laura Kestner, former associate editor,
has been promoted to editor of the DeLeon Free Press, effective July
of 2006. As editor, she will assume the responsibility of producing,
managing and editing the newspaper.
Kestner, who recently moved to DeLeon,
for a second time, worked at the Free Press as reporter and associate
editor from 2002-2004 before leaving for family reasons. She rejoined
the paper again, as reporter, in July of 2005. She has provided
reporting coverage for both the DeLeon City Council and the Comanche
County Commissioners Court, as well as numerous feature articles and
photographic assignments.
Kestner has previously worked as a writer
and/or an editor for the Dublin Progress, Dublin Citizen and Hico News
Review. She also briefly published her own newspaper, The Lone Star
Gazette. Her freelance work has appeared in the Senior Edition,
Stephenville Empire Tribune, Weatherford Democrat and Brownwood
Bulletin. |

The DeLeon School Board met in special
session, Wednesday, June 28, and appointed Janet McGinnis to serve for
the remainder of Kellie Sparger’s term.
Sparger recently resigned for personal
reasons.
No other action was taken. |

DeLeon
firemen took delivery of the latest addition to the Volunteer Fire
Department's fleet of firefighting vehicles on Thursday afternoon,
June 29, when a new International 7300, 255 h.p. all-wheel-drive
diesel truck was delivered. The new truck, which consisted only of a
cab and chassis, was acquired at a cost of almost $75,500.

STEEL
DELIVERY AT THE NEW FESTIVAL GROUNDS. Steel for construction at
the Festival Park Grounds was delivered Thursday, June 29, and
several City officials, as well as one Peach and Melon Festival
representative, were on hand to watch it being unloaded. Pictured
