PROMONTORY PARK -- A family outing on Proctor Lake turned tragic around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, June 17, when a small raft overturned, suddenly throwing its occupants into the lake waters.

Sharon Hawkins, 43, of Stephenville, and a 7-year-old female relative were in the small raft. The girl managed to swim to safety. Hawkins did not.

At a campsite on the opposite side of the same lake cove, two young men, Terry Crownover and Jade Brown, were preparing to go swimming when they spotted Hawkins floating face down in the water, approximately 50 feet from the shore.

Donnie Crownover, Terry’s grandfather, was called. He ran into the water and pulled Hawkins out. Donnie’s wife, Glenda, called 9-1-1 and EMS and DeLeon First Responders were dispatched. An ambulance arrived around five minutes later.

Donnie Crownover stated that when he pulled Hawkins from the water she had no heartbeat, was not breathing and her lips had started turning blue.

Although CPR procedures were initiated and Hawkins was quickly transported to the Comanche County Medical Center Emergency Room, it was to no avail and she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Comanche County Chief Deputy Chris Pounds stated that he has ordered an autopsy, however, no foul play is suspected and, in all likelihood, the death will be ruled accidental.

The raft used in the drowning incident was barely more than one yard wide and more than one foot tall. It had an inside leg space of less than one foot in diameter. Hawkins was not reported to have been wearing a floatation vest.
