into the lake waters.
Sharon Hawkins, 43, of Stephenville, and
a 7-year-old female relative were in the small raft. The girl managed

Mattie Newton celebrated her 100th
birthday this week, surrounded by family and friends.
Several days prior to her celebration,
Mrs. Newton said she didn’t have a sure-fire answer for everyone to
live to be 100, but she did know that she personally “ate lots of
vegetables” and “never smoked.” She’s also a firm believer in the
benefits of hard work. Relatives say she mowed her yard with a push
mower until she was well into her 90s. >>Full Story<< |

Community Rehab Project 2006 was held during the week of June 11 – 16.
Over 400 local and not-so-local volunteers, ranging in age from 12 to
80, completed renovations including painting, roofing, siding, windows
and more on 24 homes during the week.
Volunteers came from Comanche County, several Texas cities, and as far
away as the State of Washington. The materials used in the projects
came from provided donations and registration fees paid by the
volunteers.
Hot weather ruled the week, but the volunteers worked diligently at
their assigned tasks. By the end of the day Friday, only two homes had
small amounts of work left to do. Each evening, Worship time was
provided by Five Stone Canvas and Kelvin Kelley.
This brings the number of volunteers involved in Community Rehab
Project since its inception seven years ago to over 1,300 and the
number of homes renovated to 86.
As amazing as it is to compare the “before” and “after” photos of the
homes, it fails in comparison to the knowledge that many of the young
people involved expressed a life long change in the way they viewed
others after spending the week involved in the Project. |
