Things will be a little different during the 92nd Annual Peach and Melon Festival, with the fiddle competition a thing of the past, and the 42 tournament scheduled for a week later than usual.

Betty Terrill, long time executive secretary for the Peach and Melon Festival, explained the changes.

“We were losing money on the fiddle competition,” Terrill said, “and had for quite some time. So they (the Festival Committee) did away with that completely and put the 42 tournament in its place.”

“Picnic in the Park” is this year’s theme and the festival will run from August 8-12, with the Queen and Little Miss pageants being held on Tuesday, August 8. The parade is scheduled for Wednesday, August 9, and will begin at 7 p.m.

Golden Saturday activities are scheduled for August 12 and include an antique and classic car show, arts and craft vendors, entertainment, watermelon slicing and watermelon seed spitting contest.

The carnival and tractor pull schedule are the same as in previous years, with the carnival running Tuesday through Saturday, and the tractor pull running Thursday through Saturday.

The Melon Patch Bike Tour is also scheduled for Saturday.

A “gospel singing” is scheduled for Thursday at the Festival stage, and a “Spanish” dance is scheduled for the same area on Friday night.

A dance, with the Calvin Milburn Band, is scheduled for Saturday night, beginning at 9 p.m., with Miss DeLeon presented at 10:30.

Terrill said there could be additional changes in Festival activities next year.

“They’re talking about doing away with both the Spanish dance and the gospel singing next year,” she said. “Last year, there were fewer than 40 people who came to the gospel singing. I’m afraid it’s just a thing of the past.”

The Festival Committee for 2006 is chaired by Avery Carlisle. Warren Mitcham is the vice chairman, while Kaye Quinn and Treasure Mailloux serve as treasurers.

Others serving on the committee include Bobby Campbell, Cathy Campbell, Ruby Carlisle, Johnny DeLatorre, Junior Gerth, David Golden, Jaye Golden, Richard Gonzales, Brandon Gilmore, Dotty Hare, Rhonda Howard, Clayton Hudson, Jackson Jobe, Heath Matteson, Bubba McCurry, Walter McCurry, Jason Pierson and Bobby Winkles.
