On Tuesday, June 13, County Judge James R. Arthur issued an emergency
burn ban restricting outdoor burning in Comanche County. The order was
effective immediately and continues for seven days.
In his order, Arthur cited “current conditions” as the reason for the
emergency order.
Arthur’s order was issued on the same day as several other Texas
counties were reported to be issuing similar burn bans. It followed by
one day a decision by the Commissioners Court to postpone instituting
a total burn ban.
Although the language in the burn ban ordinance did not specifically
include trash burning, the phrase “any outdoor burning” would appear
to prohibit that as well. No mention of fireworks was included in the
order.
Violation of the burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a
fine not to exceed $500. |

COMANCHE – A malfunctioning air
conditioning system caused the Commissioners Court to meet in a very
warm County Courtroom on Monday, June 12. The Commissioners considered
at least two hot topics – whether to reinstitute a total outdoor burn
ban and whether to assist the formation of a volunteer fire department
in Proctor.

mayor, Thursday, June 8, with all council members present except

GRASS WILL BURN. Lonnie Painter, in the foreground with his back
to the camera, was cutting grass for hay baling late Saturday
afternoon when his swather hit a rock and sparked a grass fire.
The property owner, Speed Williams, along with his wife, Jennifer,
and daugher, Hali, rode over on a four-wheeler to see what the
excitement was all about as DeLeon volunteer firemen continued
dousing the fire. Williams recently purchased the Joiner property
on Highway 16 a couple of miles north of DeLeon and is currently
moving here from Llano. He is notable for having won seven world
titles in team roping on the professional rodeo circuit as the
header roper. The firemen were very quick to respond to the fire
as they were still all assembled for the DeLeon VFD’s annual BBQ
supper. Also pictured is DeLeon fireman John Quade. |

SUCCESSFUL FIRE DEPARTMENT BBQ. Many DeLeon area residents
participated in the Volunteer Fire Department barbecue last
Saturday, which this year was a benefit for the family of Clyde
Brinson, long time DeLeon Fire Chief. Brinson passed away May 11,
2006. Pictured above is Chief Doyle Rone, tending the cooking in
front of City Hall, while other members of the department prepared
and served food inside the auditorium. |
