VAN DYKE – In its first action following a long executive session at the beginning of its meeting, the Board of Directors of the Comanche County Consolidated Hospital District agreed to accept a bid from Alan Striegler to purchase the old DeLeon Nursing Home building, subject to review of the purchase contract presented by the buyer.

The District had earlier advertised for bids on the long-closed facility on Ayers Street. Three bids were received and opened on Friday, May 24. Striegler’s bid of $59,000 was the high bid of the three. >>Full Story<<

The area received fairly generous rainfalls in March, April and early May, leading some to hope that the drouth that began in April 2005 had broken and that 2006 would see a return to normal moisture patterns. Indeed, most stock tanks have good water levels and most of the area’s stream beds still have some water, either running or pooled.

Although the 2005 drouth may be the on the wane, the hot and dry conditions of the past four weeks have many fearing its resumption.

The National Weather Service, in its summer months outlook, has most of Texas rated as “equal chances for average” in terms of precipitation, but above average to slighly above average for temperatures.

Despite the spring rains, the area remains well below normal in moisture, having received less than 21 inches of rainfall during the past 12 months. The long term average rainfall for the area is over 31 inches.

Using long term seasonal rainfall patterns as a projection basis, the 11.9 inches of rain received during the first five months of 2006 are trending toward an annual rainfall total of around 28 inches, still below normal, but well above the 20.68 inch total for 2005.

Community Rehab Project 2006 begins this Sunday, June 11, and lasts through Friday, June 16.

Over 300 local and not so local volunteers will work on 21 different projects during the week. Volunteers from several Texas cities, and as far away as Washington state, will be in our communities, working alongside our local adults and youth to complete these projects.

The projects are done at no cost to the homeowner. The materials come from provided donations and the labor comes from a love of others.

Home projects to be completed are: Gustine: 200 Ave. A.; DeLeon: 432 Lockney, 448 Harvey, 216 Weatherford, 809 E. Ham, 516 S. Moseley, 325 S. Bowie, 8780 Hwy 16; Comanche: 107 N. Elm, 307 N. Travis, 306 N. Pine, 1000 E. Grand, 850 CR 400 A, 1109 S. Mary, 605 E. Duncan, 1010 N. Lane, 103 E. Pecan.

Four more home projects will be done, but addresses are not available at this time.

The crews will be on their jobsites at 7:30 each morning and will break during lunch for a time of Bible study. Work will stop at around 4:30 and a Worship Service will be held each night at 7:00 p.m. at the Comanche High School Gym.

The public is invited to attend the Worship Services.

DOWNTOWN PAVING. Northeastern Pavers of Granbury kept traffic disrupted in downtown DeLeon on Monday and Tuesday as they first applied a sealcoat to the old milled pavement on Monday and then on Tuesday applied a two inch layer of fresh asphalt. Following the paving, the only significant steps remaining to complete the downtown streets and sidewalks renovation is installation of the decorative stonework, which is well underway, and of the hand railings near the ramps, which are currently being manufactured. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.
