The newest DeLeon City Council members were sworn-in during a regularly scheduled meeting, Thursday, May 25, 2006, before a relatively large group of spectators.

Due to the size of the crowd (most there to watch a friend or family member being sworn in) the meeting was conducted in the City Hall auditorium, instead of City Council chambers. Johnnye Howell was the only council member absent.

As Karen Wilkerson, DeLeon City Secretary, acknowledged each of the council members who had completed a term, she presented them with a plaque from the city. Receiving such plaques were Howard Gifford, Danny Owen, Gayle Stroud and out-going mayor, Jim Adams. Both Gifford and Owen will serve again. Gifford in the Place 1 seat, and Owen as mayor.

After the new Council members -- Avery Carlisle, Norma Locke, Gifford and Owen -- took the oath of office and were sworn in, they were seated immediately and took charge of the meeting.

Mayor Owen suggested Howard Gifford for the position of mayor pro tem, and Councilman John Holdridge made a motion to that effect, which was seconded by Norma Locke.

Routine items, including accounts payable and payroll, and changing the signatories at the bank, were approved.

Also approved was the second reading of Ordinance No. # 004-06, repealing ordinance #002-06, which provided restrictions for vendors to park trailers and vehicles on the west side of North Houston; between Gonzales and Reynosa.

In addition to the new council members, the four DeLeon police officers -- Ralph Dickey, Robert Kluge, Richard Hyatt and Dustin Paulsen -- were sworn-in under the new administration; as was Judge L.T. Lewis.
