National Volunteer Week occurs in mid April each year and DeLeon Volunteers were out enjoying the beautiful day and helping others by participating in Make a Difference Day, Saturday, April 22.

With a wonderful turnout of volunteers to do work for the widows and handicapped of our community, we organized into four teams to cover the four quadrants of the city with Archie Frost, Lonnie Richardson, Carl Strube, Jack Pilcher, Christine Steed, Waymon Johnson, Greg Cisneroz, Blanton Jones, Jackie Gentry, Dean Nowlin, Donnie Nowlin, D’Arla Nowlin, John Weaver and Marshal and Linda Valentino (this couple is new to DeLeon and just wanted to be involved in helping others.)

The work party this year included three women, which is the first time we’ve had women volunteers work in the Make A Difference Day program. Thank you ladies, you showed the men how to do it.

Work was done from the south on Hwy 16 to the north side of DeLeon on N. Texas and N. Travis, to the west on Ayers Street, to the east on Mohon and S. Comanche.

Our workers finished by 2 p.m. and a good day was had by all. Many blessings were received -- thank you’s, a cash donation, and one lady on Mohon purchased lunch for her work crew. We also had one lady call in to offer to donate two air conditioners for the elderly should anyone need this kind of help.

Work consisted of tree trimmings, clipping hedges, poison for ants, tearing down a gate, clearing debris off roofs, removing a door, clearing flower beds, other small requests, and hauling off the limbs and trimmings.

Thanks to all you volunteers for your work to help others.

Sometimes we get caught up in living for the future and we really don’t realize the wonderful blessings we can experience today just by helping others. We need to remember that the things we do today can make a difference, and the people we meet today might be some of the best friends we will ever know. The point of all this is to say -- enjoy today. Help someone, your blessings are multiplied.
