National Volunteer Week occurs in mid
April each year and DeLeon Volunteers were out enjoying the beautiful
day and helping others by participating in Make a Difference Day,
Saturday, April 22.
With a wonderful turnout of volunteers to do work for the widows and
handicapped of our community, we organized into four teams to cover
the four quadrants of the city with Archie Frost, Lonnie Richardson,
Carl Strube, Jack Pilcher, Christine Steed, Waymon Johnson, Greg
Cisneroz, Blanton Jones, Jackie Gentry, Dean Nowlin, Donnie Nowlin,

COMANCHE – The Commissioners Court barely
had a quorum at their meeting on Monday, April 24, as two members,
Commissioners Bobby Schuman and Clyde Brinson, were absent due to
medical reasons. County Judge James Arthur, who does not normally
participate in the voting, provided the necessary third vote.
The first action item on the agenda was
presented by the City of Comanche’s Director of Public Works, Darwin
Dickerson. Dickerson read a statement on behalf of the Comanche
County/City Airport Board which thanked the County for its budget
support for the airport and then listed improvement made at the
facility during the preceding year. >>Full Story<< |

WATERWORKS. Big improvements are underway out at the Upper Leon
River Municipal Water District where an 800,000 gallon treated
water tank is being constructed. It will complement a nearby
1,000,000 gallon tank constructed in 1969. Together, the two tanks
can supply 12-18 hours of system water demand for the cities of
DeLeon, Comanche, Gorman, Dublin and Hamilton, thus allowing a
longer plant downtime for maintenance operations. The concrete
side and roof panels were cast on-site and will be wrapped in over
31 miles of pre-stressed wire. Completion is expected by the end
of May. The water tank is part of a $4.6 million project, which
includes construction of a raw water intake system direct from the
lake and the construction of three pump stations to enable the
District to deliver treated, rather than raw, water to Hamilton.
The entire project is projected to be completed by the end of
2006. Funding for the project is through the USDA's Rural
Development office with a grant of approximately 30% and the
balance in long term debt. |

THEY'RE
BACK! This was the scene early Tuesday as TxDOT employees worked
at replacing the signal light at the intersection of Texas (main)
Street and Reynosa. The old light was removed in March as part of
the downtown lighting and sidewalk improvement project. |
