In
a specially-called meeting Thursday, April 6, the DeLeon Independent
School District Board of Trustees named John Ward of Brownwood as the
new boys' athletic director for DeLeon High School.
Ward, 36, has been a defensive line
coach, head powerlifting coach and in charge of the off-season program
at Brownwood High School during the past nine years.
He has been coaching for 14 years in
college and high school, playing football at Kilgore Junior College
and Howard Payne University. He coached at Howard Payne and
Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, and at Cooper High School in
Cooper, Texas, before coming to Brownwood ISD. At Cooper, he was the
defensive coordinator and strength coach.
Ward and his wife Jan (who he calls his
"backbone") have two daughters, Lauren Jane, 10, and Kristi Elizabeth,
8. Jan currently works with children in a daycare center in Brownwood.
Ward's classroom teaching experience is
in the areas of biology, physical education and health. Ward, who is
self-described as "bi-vocational," has served as pastor for the
Gustine First Baptist Church and for 13 years as a "huddle leader" for
the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Ward said he is looking forward to
working with the youth of DeLeon. "We're excited to be here," he said.
"We're honored to become part of such a great program. I've always
heard of the tradition here.
"I'm ready to go to work," he said, "to
be a positive influence to the community, the kids, the school and the
administration. My big deal is to mold kids into young men for them
to be champions on and off the field.
"I have three priorities," he said. "God,
my family, and my ministry coaching, teaching and all the rest. I
believe God placed me here and I am blessed to be here."
